Student answer (Band 6.5)

The construction of high-rise buildings is an effective way to provide sufficient houses in urban areas. Although I acknowledge that tall apartment blocks will assist in accommodating more people and save lands, I do not believe that it is the best way to provide enough homes for in large cities. Therefore, I partly disagree with this statement.

Tall apartment creates rooms for a lot of people. Most high-rise buildings accommodate thousands of people, so houses should be built up instead of our to save land that can be used for other purposes, such as factories, offices and schools. For instance, skyscrapers contain a lot of units that can accommodate more people than a five to six bungalows.

However, this is not an effective way to provide enough homes for people. This is because it is expensive to build tall apartment blocks and it takes time to complete. Meanwhile, the huge financial investment involve in constructing these apartments leads to high rents, which is above the pay of most office workers. Also, the time required to build these apartments is a lot making it hard to solve the problem of housing shortage quickly.

Instead of demolishing old houses to build skyscrapers, they should be renovated because it will be less expensive and faster.

In conclusion, although building of tall apartments assist in accommodating a lot of people and prevent extensive land use, I believe it is not the best way to provide sufficient homes because they take time to construct and after construction they become expensive. Rather, old abandon buildings should be renovated.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed the prompt and provided a clear position throughout the essay. You acknowledge the benefits of high-rise buildings while arguing that they are not the 'best' solution due to cost and construction time. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the suggestion to renovate old buildings is a good alternative, but it is not fully explored in terms of how it would realistically solve the housing shortage in a large city. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting arguments are more detailed and provide a more comprehensive analysis of why your proposed alternative is superior to the tall apartment block model.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'However', and 'In conclusion' to signal shifts in your argument. While the progression is generally clear, some transitions feel a bit mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid. For example, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to better connect the benefits of high-rises with the subsequent critique of their cost. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the readability of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'accommodating', 'financial investment', and 'demolishing'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'build up instead of our' (likely a typo for 'out') and 'huge financial investment involve' (should be 'involved'). Additionally, the phrase 'above the pay of most office workers' is slightly unnatural; 'beyond the financial reach' would be more precise. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensure that your word forms are grammatically correct in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is a positive step. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader, such as 'Tall apartment creates' (should be 'Tall apartments create'), 'five to six bungalows' (the 'a' is redundant), and 'building of tall apartments assist' (should be 'assists'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. To achieve a higher band, focus on subject-verb agreement and article usage. Proofreading your work for these small but frequent errors will significantly improve the overall accuracy of your writing.
