Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The essay addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding deforestation and animal habitats is asserted but lacks a logical link to how tall buildings specifically solve this compared to other urban planning methods. The example of Dubai is vague and does not clearly illustrate the point about pollution. While the response covers all parts of the task, the supporting arguments are under-developed and rely on generalisations. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific, logical explanations for your claims and ensure your examples directly support the points made in each paragraph.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'On the other hand' are used to signal the progression of ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is slightly disjointed due to grammatical errors. Referencing is generally clear, but the connection between sentences could be smoother. The conclusion effectively summarises the main points, though it repeats some of the phrasing from the introduction. Overall, the structure is coherent, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and better sentence-to-sentence transitions.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of awkward word choices and incorrect collocations, such as 'constricted high length building blocks' instead of 'constructing high-rise apartment blocks', and 'law budget' instead of 'low budget'. Some phrases are repetitive, and the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited. While the meaning is generally clear, the errors in word choice and the lack of sophisticated, topic-specific vocabulary prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on learning collocations related to urban planning and housing, and pay closer attention to word forms and spelling to avoid distracting errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'animal gets enough space'), missing articles, and incorrect word forms (e.g., 'build tall building' instead of 'building tall buildings'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable and affect the overall fluency of the writing. The control of punctuation is generally acceptable, but the sentence construction often feels forced or unnatural. To improve, you should focus on mastering basic sentence patterns and proofreading for common errors like pluralisation and article usage.
