Student answer (Band 7.0)

the methodical way of serving enough homes to citizens in mega cities is to construct high rise apartment blocks. I partially agree with the notion in terms of providing shelter at large extent.

On the one hand, living in tower block is difficult, the primary cause is living space, residents have to live in strict allocated space which feels congested compared to the tenement or bungalow styled homes. Moreover, apartment styled homes requires heavy maintenance, and many residents have to pay expensive maintenance fee. Furthermore, many times apartment residents have to dealt with water deficit and electricity shortages, which are the crucial challenges that cause significant stress and discomfort for families. Additionally, in such dire consequences like earthquake or other natural calamities it would be a daunting task to evacuate large population in short span of time.

On the other hand, bungalow styled homes requires humongous space compared to multistorey building it would be less effective to allocate house for increased population. Furthermore, tenement houses consists regular maintenance and requires extensive time to build, whereas, multistorey building requires less time to construct and it would be cost effective in terms of facilities. In addition to it, private house are less secure in natural disaster, to cite an example, in water flood condition banglow owners suffer the most as it usually established on horizontal space.

To sum up, living in vertical multistorey building would be much convenient compared to private house, Notably, multisorey build could not provide a luxury taste like exquisite mansion, they usually constructed on cost effective purpose. Eventually, to provide housing shelter for enormous population tall building would be pragmatic solution.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have identified both the advantages and disadvantages of high-rise living, which demonstrates a balanced approach. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed; for instance, the mention of 'water deficit' and 'electricity shortages' in apartment blocks is a strong point, but it could have been linked more explicitly to the urban infrastructure challenges of large cities. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance, though it introduces a slight contradiction by stating that high-rise buildings are not for 'luxury' after having discussed their pragmatic necessity. Overall, the task is addressed well, and the position is consistent.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'Moreover,' 'Furthermore,' and 'To sum up' to guide the reader through your arguments. While the logical flow is generally good, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the connection between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the discussion of maintenance fees and utility shortages is abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the use of 'they' in the final paragraph, which could be more precisely linked to the subject. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the progression of ideas is logical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including terms like 'pragmatic solution,' 'natural calamities,' and 'multistorey.' However, there are instances of awkward word choices and collocations, such as 'serving enough homes' (instead of 'providing') and 'luxury taste' (instead of 'luxurious lifestyle'). Some spelling errors, such as 'banglow' and 'multisorey,' also occur. While these errors do not impede communication, they limit the precision of your writing. To reach a higher band, focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring accurate spelling of key terms related to urban planning and housing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'apartment styled homes requires' (should be 'require') and 'in water flood condition' (should be 'in flood conditions'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some run-on sentences and comma splices that affect the flow. While you attempt complex structures, they are not always error-free. To improve, pay closer attention to pluralization and the correct use of prepositions, and ensure that your complex sentences are punctuated correctly to maintain clarity.
