Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent years, with the growing population it is believed that the most effective way to provide enough homes in large cities is to construct high rise apartments because it is beneficial for space management. I partially agree with the statement, I believe although building high rise blocks benefits the society at large, it has its own disadvantages in terms of its management. this essay will discuss both the views before explaining why constructing tall apartments in essential in large cities.

One of the significant advantages of tall buildings is, that it can accommodate large number of people at one place. For example, nowadays, lot of new projects are developing in NCR regions which have 1000 household constructed together in one unit area. As a result, it is easy for government as well to allocate spaces for emerging population.

On the contrary, tall buildings has its own disadvantages. Particularly, in case of fire and natural clamities. Recent research suggests, there is a sudden rise in number of deaths in India due to fire and earthquakes effecting high rise apartments because of either difficulty in evacuation at the time of fire or lack in infrastructure of the building. Leading to shift in people preference for individual houses.

In conclusion, high rise apartments defiantly solve authorities problem considerably in large cities. On the other hand, individuals refrain to prefer high rise buildings due to its negative impact and still prefer to stay in individual houses which require more space and area.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of high-rise buildings. However, the essay is slightly under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of the argument. While the position is clear, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial; for instance, the mention of 'NCR regions' is a good start, but the explanation of why high-rise living is 'essential' is not fully explored. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and does not fully synthesize the arguments presented. To improve, ensure that each body paragraph provides a more detailed explanation and a clear link back to the main thesis statement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the contrary,' 'For example,' and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the use of 'this' at the start of sentences without a clear antecedent. Paragraphing is present, but the transition between the benefits and the drawbacks could be smoother to enhance the overall progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'space management,' 'natural calamities,' and 'evacuation.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'effecting high rise apartments' (should be 'affecting') and 'authorities problem' (missing possessive apostrophe). The range is somewhat limited, and the repetition of words like 'buildings' and 'apartments' suggests a need for a wider variety of synonyms to demonstrate more sophisticated control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('tall buildings has its own disadvantages') and punctuation errors (the comma splice in the introduction: 'I partially agree with the statement, I believe...'). There are also minor errors with articles and prepositions. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic agreement and punctuation would improve the accuracy of the writing.
