Student answer (Band 6.0)

Around the world, the construction of tall apartment blocks in large cities has become increasingly common in recent years. Many people believe that large apartment blocks provide enough homes. From my perspective, I strongly agree with this statement.

First and foremost, large cities have limited land available for the construction of new houses; therefore, they can construct large apartment blocks to accommodate the growing population. Another reason for the increasing construction of apartment blocks is that governments can protect land from degradation, which is caused by the expansion of cities onto agricultural land. For example, constructors build tall apartment blocks vertically instead of instructing thousands of individual houses. An abundance of facilities available in these residential towers, including escalators, travellators, elevators, security cameras, car parking areas and swimming pools.

Governments should ban to build individual houses because of increasing population problems. While a large number of people do not have enough money to purchase their own houses, many people prefer to live in tower blocks because they are more affordable. It is widely recognized that high-rise apartments enhance the beauty of a city. Architectures use different types of designs for these towers including mirror and wood works. For instance, people who live in rural areas often move to large cities because they are looking for employment. As a result they prefer to search those departments in which every type of the facilities available .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the essay is under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of development. While the main arguments regarding land scarcity and affordability are relevant, they are somewhat underdeveloped. For instance, the point about 'architectures' and 'mirror and wood works' is not clearly linked to the core argument of providing enough homes. The conclusion is also missing, which is a significant omission for a task of this nature. To improve, ensure you meet the word count requirement and provide a clear summary or concluding thought to round off your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, and there is a basic logical progression. You use some cohesive devices like 'First and foremost', 'therefore', and 'For example' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally disrupted by awkward phrasing, such as the transition into the final paragraph. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the connection between the final sentence and the rest of the paragraph is weak. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that directly supports your thesis.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are some errors in word choice, such as using 'constructors' instead of 'construction companies' or 'architectures' instead of 'architects'. Additionally, the phrase 'search those departments' is misused in this context. While you attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'residential towers' and 'agricultural land', the overall range is limited. To improve, focus on learning collocations and using more precise terminology related to urban planning and housing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'Governments should ban to build' (should be 'ban building'), 'every type of the facilities available' (missing verb 'is'), and 'instructing thousands of individual houses' (incorrect verb choice). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the grammatical inaccuracies occasionally hinder the clarity of your message. To improve, focus on verb patterns (e.g., 'ban' + gerund) and ensure that your sentences have complete subject-verb-object structures.
