Student answer (Band 6.5)

Around the world, the construction of tall apartment blocks in large cities has become increasingly common in recent years. Many people believe that large apartment blocks provide enough homes. From my perspective, I strongly agree with this statement.

First and foremost, large cities have limited land available for the construction of new houses; therefore, they can construct large apartment blocks to accommodate the growing population. Another reason for the increasing construction of apartment blocks is that governments can protect land from degradation, which is caused by the expansion of cities onto agricultural land. For example, constructors build tall apartment blocks vertically instead of instructing thousands of individual houses. An abundance of facilities available in these residential towers, including escalators, travellators, elevators, security cameras, car parking areas and swimming pools.

Governments should ban to build individual houses because of increasing population problems. While a large number of people do not have enough money to purchase their own houses, many people prefer to live in tower blocks because they are more affordable. It is widely recognized that high-rise apartments enhance the beauty of a city. Architectures use different types of designs for these towers including mirror and wood works. For instance, people who live in rural areas often move to large cities because they are looking for employment. As a result they prefer to live in apartment buildings where a wide range of facilities is available.

In conclusion, the most effective way to provide enough living space in a limited area is to build tall apartment blocks. Governments should invest money on these apartments to prevent the forest area around cities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding land scarcity and environmental protection are relevant. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. For instance, the mention of 'escalators' and 'travellators' in residential towers is slightly unusual and detracts from the main argument about housing density. The suggestion that governments should 'ban' individual houses is an extreme position that lacks nuance or consideration of alternative housing solutions, which limits the depth of the argument. To reach a higher band, ensure that all supporting points directly reinforce the main thesis with logical, real-world justification.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Another reason', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the sudden shift to discussing architectural design (mirror and wood works) which does not clearly link back to the main argument about housing supply. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the internal flow within paragraphs could be improved to ensure a more seamless connection between sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'degradation', 'agricultural land', and 'residential towers'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'constructors build' (should be 'construction companies' or 'developers') and 'ban to build' (should be 'ban the construction of'). The use of 'architectures' to refer to the people designing buildings is also incorrect; the term should be 'architects'. Expanding the range of vocabulary and ensuring precise usage would improve the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'Governments should ban to build individual houses' (should be 'ban the building of'), 'invest money on these' (should be 'invest money in'), and 'prevent the forest area' (should be 'preserve'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors in sentence construction. To improve, focus on verb patterns (e.g., 'ban + gerund') and prepositional usage to ensure greater accuracy in complex sentences.
