The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that building high-rise apartments is the most efficient way to manage population density and provide residence to them. I agree with this statement to a greater extent. My stance is explained further with significant examples in ensuing paragraphs.

The foremost reason is that it will provide the sufficient space to live and to utilise. This can be attributed to easy maintenance and better facilities compared to bungalows. As in high-rise apartments the facilities such as gym, swimming pool, club house and many other amenities are easily accessible. Moreover, it will help government to develop the remaining space efficiently. Therefore, it provides much higher benefits and the facility.

The another most important factor is that in the recent times it is considered prestigious to live in the apartment. As in it provides the view of whole city from your house. For instance, the price of apartments are increasing with time in major metropolises such as the New York. In addition to that they are commonly situated in the center of city. Thus, provides more advantage.

However, we should not ignore the disadvantages of the apartments. The first is that it often causes the issues related to parking space. Moreover, there are higher risk form some natural calamities such as the earthquake or flood. However, latest technologies are now able to cope with this issue to some extent; but, there are higher risk.

On the way to conclude, I reaffirm my statement that I agree to this to a grater extent. Although there are some risk but they are more like to be solved in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument regarding 'prestigious' living is not strongly linked to the core issue of providing 'enough homes' for a growing population. The points about maintenance and amenities are relevant but could be expanded with more depth. While the essay covers the main aspects of the prompt, the supporting evidence, such as the mention of New York, is brief and lacks a detailed connection to the broader argument about urban planning. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point directly supports the central thesis with more thorough explanation and analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'The foremost reason', 'Moreover', and 'On the way to conclude', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as in the sentence 'As in it provides the view of whole city'. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the connection between the final paragraph and the preceding arguments is somewhat abrupt. Improving the variety and natural flow of linking phrases would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'population density', 'metropolises', and 'natural calamities'. However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'provide residence to them' instead of 'provide housing for them', and 'grater' (spelling error). The range is sufficient to discuss the topic, but the lack of more sophisticated or precise collocations limits the score. Focusing on learning word families and common collocations related to urban development would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('in the center of city'), incorrect preposition usage, and punctuation issues (e.g., the semicolon usage in the fourth paragraph). Some sentences are slightly fragmented or lack grammatical cohesion, such as 'Thus, provides more advantage'. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are persistent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the accuracy of basic sentence construction and refining the use of complex structures will help improve this score.
