Student answer (Band 5.0)

Worlds population has grown rapidly from past few years and this has major effect on larger cities. The advocates who manage population suggested that making larger buildings for numerous homes is beneficial. I firmly believe that this trend has both negative and positives effects on development.

First and foremost, constructing huge buildings has various benefits for metropolitan cities. For instance, mass number of people move to large cities for better jobs and for their future. After this, cost of living and rent rises in such cities , after making more homes in larger cities can diminish the cost of expenses for individuals.

Furthermore, it can also make the city more attractive by huge and tall buildings. These buildings is also used for advertisements for various brands. Moreover, it also produces facilities and opportunity for job seekers, and also beneficial

for the economic growth of the city itself.

However, it has some negative consequences such as, people do suicides from big buildings and also fall from them during construction of those tall buildings.

Similarly, the most common negative aspect of larger building is that, it can collapse during major Earthquakes and cause people fall down and buried under them. Various examples of building collapse available on internet during earthquakes.

In Japan, earthquakes are happened on daily basis and building larger buildings is not allowed because of collisions.

In my perspective, constructing larger building just for the need of more homes has negative development on city. It can cause different effects for instance collision of buildings during earthquakes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the pros and cons of tall apartment blocks. However, the development of ideas is limited. While you mention economic growth and housing costs, the points are not fully extended with specific examples or logical depth. The conclusion contradicts the earlier positive points, making your overall position slightly inconsistent. To improve, ensure each paragraph focuses on a single, well-supported argument and maintain a consistent stance throughout the essay. The points regarding 'suicides' and 'falling from buildings' are somewhat tangential and lack a clear connection to the urban planning debate, which weakens the overall argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. For example, 'After this' and 'In my perspective' are used in ways that do not naturally link the ideas. The transition between the positive and negative aspects is abrupt. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'nevertheless') and ensure that each sentence flows logically from the previous one. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to track the subject of your arguments.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. You rely on basic terms like 'huge', 'big', and 'larger'. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'people do suicides' (should be 'commit suicide') and 'collisions of buildings' (which is not the correct term for structural failure during earthquakes). To improve, try to incorporate more academic collocations and precise terminology related to urban development and architecture. Avoid repetitive phrasing and focus on using words that accurately convey your intended meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('These buildings is also used') and awkward phrasing ('earthquakes are happened on daily basis'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma placement. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice. Reviewing your work for these common errors before finishing will help you achieve a higher level of accuracy and demonstrate better control over your sentence construction.
