Student answer (Band 6.0)

Land is a limited resource which is being extensively used. Deforestation is taking place on a large scale to set up industries, build houses and other buildings to meet the needs of humans. The ever-increasing world population raises a concern for housing especially in metropolitan cities since land is not readily available. In this essay, we will discuss the best possible way to provide sufficient houses in large cities.

Lack of houses in cities causes people to live in the outskirts of cities, sometimes even an hour or so away from their school or workplace. I entirely agree that tall buildings are a great solution to provide housing facilities to people in crowded cities. Firstly, apartment blocks are compact and take up way less space than traditional homes do. Since they are built vertically unlike houses, they can be home to ten to fifteen times the number of people living in houses. In addition to this, apartments also help in protecting the environment by reducing land requirements and thus prevent further deforestation. They also leave more space for building parks and community centres in the locality to improve the air quality in large cities which suffer badly from pollution.

Furthermore, the positive effects of tall apartments may be seen in almost all cities. For example, in Chandigarh, around a decade ago, overpopulation become a major concern which consequentially led to a large number of people constantly finding homes to rent. The builders then set up tall apartment buildings and ever since then, housing has not been an issue in Chandigarh. Moreover, it offers excellent living spaces along with a really lush green environment.

To conclude, with urbanisation and population increasing substantially, tall apartments offer a sustainable solution for the need of new houses. The pros of living in flats make them an appealing choice for city dwellers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses the prompt well, clearly stating a position in favor of tall apartment blocks. The ideas are relevant and supported by logical arguments regarding space efficiency and environmental benefits. The example of Chandigarh provides a concrete illustration of the argument, which strengthens the response. While the development is generally good, the discussion could be further enhanced by briefly acknowledging counter-arguments, such as the social impact of high-density living, to provide a more balanced and nuanced perspective. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition to this', 'Furthermore', and 'To conclude' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more varied to improve the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure supports the development of the argument effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task and allows for clear communication. You have used some good topic-specific collocations like 'limited resource', 'ever-increasing world population', and 'sustainable solution'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'finding homes to rent' which could be more precise, and 'overpopulation become' which is a grammatical error affecting lexical accuracy. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated, less common lexical items and ensure collocations are consistently natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear, and communication is not impeded by errors. However, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'overpopulation become a major concern' (should be 'became') and 'the need of new houses' (should be 'the need for'). While you show control over basic structures, the range of complex grammatical forms is somewhat limited. Increasing the use of varied subordinate clauses and ensuring consistent tense agreement would help elevate the score in this criterion.
