Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many large cities, the demand for housing is increasing due to rapid population growth. Some people believe that constructing tall apartment buildings is the most effective way to provide enough homes. I completely agree with this view because high-rise buildings can accommodate more people while making better use of limited land.

Firstly, tall apartment blocks can provide housing for a large number of people in a small area. Since land in major cities is expensive and limited, building upwards is a practical solution. This allows governments to meet the growing demand for homes without expanding the city into surrounding farmland or green spaces. As a result, more families can live close to schools, hospitals, and workplaces.

Secondly, high-rise apartments can improve urban planning and reduce living costs. When many people live in one building, it is easier and cheaper to provide public services such as transport, electricity, and water. In addition, residents can enjoy shared facilities like parking areas, parks, gyms, and security systems. For example, cities such as Singapore have successfully used apartment blocks to provide affordable and well-organised housing for millions of people.

However, some people argue that building tall apartment blocks is not the best solution. They believe that high-rise buildings can become overcrowded, increase traffic congestion, and reduce people’s privacy. In addition, families with children may prefer living in houses with gardens instead of small apartments. Therefore, some cities should also develop suburban housing projects to provide people with more living options.

In conclusion, although tall apartment buildings may have some disadvantages, I believe they are the most effective way to provide enough homes in large cities because they save land, accommodate more people, and support better urban

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have provided relevant arguments for your stance, such as land efficiency and the ease of providing public services. The counter-argument is acknowledged, which adds balance to the discussion. However, the conclusion is incomplete, as the final sentence cuts off abruptly ('support better urban'), which prevents a fully developed summary of your position. To reach a higher band, ensure that all sections, especially the conclusion, are fully articulated to provide a sense of closure to the argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly,' 'Secondly,' 'In addition,' and 'However' effectively to guide the reader. The paragraphing is appropriate for an academic essay. The main issue is the abrupt ending in the final paragraph, which disrupts the flow and cohesion of the conclusion. Aside from this, the logical sequencing of arguments is sound, and the relationship between ideas is generally clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'rapid population growth,' 'practical solution,' and 'urban planning' are used accurately. You attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is appropriate for this task. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation that impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms or idiomatic expressions to demonstrate a wider, more flexible range of vocabulary, which would help elevate the essay to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use subordinating conjunctions like 'because' and 'although' effectively to create complex sentences. The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors in tense or subject-verb agreement. Punctuation is used correctly throughout most of the text. The main issue is the incomplete final sentence, which is a grammatical error caused by the unfinished thought. Otherwise, the control over grammar is consistent, and the majority of your sentences are error-free, which is a strong indicator of your current proficiency.
