Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the topic but struggles to maintain a clear focus on the specific prompt, which asks about 'tall apartment blocks' as a solution for housing in large cities. The essay frequently drifts into a general discussion about 'well-constructed houses' and 'individual homes,' which is not the core of the argument. While a position is stated, the development of ideas is limited and somewhat repetitive. The examples provided, such as the reference to Japan, are relevant but lack the depth required to fully support the argument regarding high-density urban living. To improve, ensure that every paragraph directly addresses the specific prompt rather than discussing housing in general.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is often disjointed. While some cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with' and 'In conclusion,' they are sometimes used mechanically or inappropriately. For instance, the transition 'Another major advantages' is grammatically incorrect and does not effectively link the ideas. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the logic between the benefits of apartment living versus individual houses. The paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks a clear, logical flow, which hinders the overall coherence of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive, relying on basic terms like 'houses,' 'buildings,' and 'good.' There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'blocking houses,' 'well establishment buildings,' and 'more wiser.' These errors occasionally impede the reader's understanding. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to express complex ideas about urban planning or housing density effectively. To reach a higher band, you should focus on learning topic-specific collocations related to urban development and housing, and practice using more precise adjectives and nouns to convey your meaning more accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a high frequency of grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('many people build a high quality houses'), incorrect verb forms ('it is more become safe'), and punctuation errors (capitalization after commas). Sentence structures are mostly simple, and attempts at complex sentences are often marred by errors, such as 'having a concrete and blocking houses making owners to give a peace of mind.' These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and prevent the essay from demonstrating a good range of structures. A focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement is essential for improvement.
