Student answer (Band 7.0)
Rapid urbanization has led to a growing demand for housing in major cities. While some people argue that constructing tall apartment buildings is the most effective solution, I largely agree with this view because they maximize land use and improve access to urban facilities. However, this approach should be complemented by proper urban planning.
Firstly, high-rise apartment blocks make efficient use of limited land in densely populated cities. As urban areas continue to expand, vacant land becomes increasingly scarce and expensive. By building vertically, governments and developers can accommodate thousands of residents in a relatively small area. This not only reduces urban sprawl but also preserves surrounding agricultural land and natural habitats. For example, cities such as Singapore and Hong Kong have successfully addressed housing shortages through well-planned high-rise residential developments.
Secondly, apartment complexes often provide residents with better access to essential infrastructure and public services. Many modern developments are located close to schools, hospitals, shopping centres, and public transport, allowing people to commute more efficiently and enjoy a higher quality of life. In addition, shared facilities such as gyms, parks, and security systems make apartment living both convenient and cost-effective.
Nevertheless, relying solely on tall apartment blocks may create problems if they are poorly designed or overcrowded. Excessive population density can place pressure on transport systems, public utilities, and green spaces. Therefore, governments should ensure that new housing projects are accompanied by adequate infrastructure, recreational areas, and sustainable city planning.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that tall apartment buildings are one of the best solutions to housing shortages in large cities because they maximize land use and improve access to essential services. However, their success depends on careful planning to ensure that cities remain livable, sustainable, and well-equipped for future growth.
