Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many large cities, the demand for housing had increased due to rapid growth in population. I strongly agree that constructing tall apartment blocks is the most efficient way to provide enough homes for the residents.

However, some people argue that tall apartment blocks can lead to overcrowding and reduce green spaces. While this concern is valid, proper urban planning can solve these problems by providing parks, playgrounds, parking areas, and other public facilities around residential buildings. In addition, modern apartment complexes often include security, recreational areas, and community spaces, which improve the quality of life for residents. Therefore, the benefits of high-rise housing clearly outweigh its disadvantages.

There is one major advantage of high-rise buildings is that they can accommodate a large number of people while using a relatively smaller plot of land. This is important in cities where land is limited and expensive. As a result, government can provide housing for more families without increasing the city’s land area.

Furthermore, apartment building are located close to public transport, schools, hospitals and workplaces. This reduces time and traffic congestion. For example, cities such as Singapore and Dubai have used high-rise residential buildings to house growing population efficiently. This approach also supports sustainable urban development and improves residents’ overall quality of life.

In conclusion, I believe that’s constructing tall buildings is the best solution for helping the need of housing for the growing population in large cities because it makes use of limited land and allows people to live closer to essential services.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have provided relevant reasons for your agreement, such as land efficiency and proximity to services, and supported these with examples like Singapore and Dubai. The ideas are generally well-developed, though the discussion on urban planning could have been slightly more detailed to reach a higher band. The conclusion effectively restates your position. Overall, the response is focused and directly answers the question asked.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you have used cohesive devices such as 'However', 'In addition', 'As a result', and 'Furthermore' to link your points effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body, and conclusion. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'sustainable urban development', 'traffic congestion', and 'accommodate'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'helping the need of housing' (should be 'addressing the need for housing'). While you use some topic-specific vocabulary, the range is not yet broad enough to consistently demonstrate the flexibility and precision required for higher bands. However, the vocabulary used is appropriate and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'There is one major advantage... is that' (a redundant verb), 'apartment building are' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'I believe that’s constructing' (incorrect use of contraction). Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not significantly impede the reader. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and avoiding redundant structures in complex sentences.
