Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people think that the best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartments blocks. I partly agree with this idea because of tall buildings can solve some housing problems, but they are not the only solution.

On the one hand, building tall apartment blocks allows many families to live in the same area. This is very useful in big cities where there is not much land available. For example, one apartment building can provide homes for hundreds of people. It can also reduce cost of land because many people share the same space. In addition, people living in apartments are often close to schools, hospitals, and shopping centre which make their daily life easier.

On the other hand, tall buildings also have some disadvantages. They can become very crowded and may cause traffic problems if too many people live in one place. Some families also prefer homes with gardens because children have more space to play. Furthermore, if the government only allows to build blocks, cities may become too busy and less comfortable.

I believe that governments should use different ways to provide more homes. They can build apartment blocks in city centres, but they should also develop new housing areas outside the city. Better public transport can help people travel easily from these places to work. This will reduce pressure on large cities and provide more housing options.

In conclusion, I partly agree that tall apartment blocks are good way to provide home in large cities. However, they should be combined with other housing solutions to meet the needs of different people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that tall apartment blocks are a viable but not exclusive solution. The ideas are relevant and logically extended, such as the discussion on land efficiency versus the need for green space. However, the development is somewhat basic. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific examples or deeper analysis of the socio-economic impacts of high-density living. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance, maintaining a consistent position throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'In addition', and 'Furthermore' effectively. However, the transitions between some sentences feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid, rather than relying on standard list-like connectors.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You use topic-specific terms like 'housing problems', 'high-density', and 'public transport'. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. There are minor inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'reduce cost of land' (should be 'reduce the cost of land') and 'good way to provide home' (should be 'a good way to provide homes'). To achieve a higher score, incorporate more sophisticated, less common vocabulary related to urban planning and infrastructure.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent minor errors, such as missing articles ('reduce cost of land', 'provide home') and minor subject-verb agreement issues ('because of tall buildings can solve' should be 'because tall buildings can solve'). Your control of punctuation is generally good, but the grammatical slips prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading for small articles and ensuring that complex sentence constructions are grammatically sound.
