Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, the dwelling place has become really crucial and people are concerned about this, so the governments all over the world prefer to make new tall buildings for residence, rather than proving separate houses. It is argued that this approach is far more substantial and is more practical, I acknowledge that this view is realistic and is more beneficial.

As a matter of fact, in recent years the population around the globe has spiked and still increasing at astonishing rate. To provide the reasonable residence, the administration decided to construct new tall buildings, skyscrapers and apartment blocks. This step would be far more beneficial, in order to provide shelter to people, rather than providing individual units for residence. For instance, in China the population in cities such as Shanghai and Beijing, has spiked and reached astronomical sum and their administration is constructing new tall apartments to provide dwellings. This step enabled them to take control over such type of concern very easily.

Consequently, this approach is significant and more rational in terms of cost and environment. The tall buildings occupies less space and entertain great sum of people. Ultimately, the less the space is occupied more chances are there to build new green parks and to protect ecosystem. Furthermore, when people lives in separate houses, this put great amount of strain on wildlife, as the government cut downs the trees and use more resources to provide dwelling, therefore, this is not a wise move. So building tall apartments is more sensible move and also, this strengthen the infrastructure of cities.

In conclusion, despite the valid reasons placed by opponents regarding other factors to provide residence, I remained convinced about the overarching benefits of tall buildings and skyscrapers are more substantial.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt clearly, maintaining a consistent position in favor of tall apartment blocks. The ideas are relevant, focusing on population density, environmental preservation, and infrastructure efficiency. However, the development is somewhat repetitive; for instance, the argument about space-saving is mentioned in both the second and third paragraphs. While the example of China is relevant, the explanation could be more nuanced to reach a higher band. The position is clear throughout, but the depth of analysis remains somewhat superficial, preventing it from reaching the level of a fully developed argument required for higher bands.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'Consequently', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are instances where the flow could be smoother. For example, the transition between the discussion of population growth and the specific example of China is a bit abrupt. Referencing is generally clear, though the use of 'this' to refer to broad concepts occasionally lacks a specific antecedent, which slightly impacts the precision of the logical progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common items like 'astronomical sum', 'overarching benefits', and 'rational', which demonstrate a reasonable range. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'proving separate houses' (should be 'providing') and 'entertain great sum of people' (should be 'accommodate a large number of people'). These errors do not impede communication but show a lack of precision that limits the score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and article usage. Examples include 'the population... has spiked and still increasing' (should be 'is still increasing'), 'the tall buildings occupies' (should be 'occupy'), and 'when people lives' (should be 'live'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the frequency of these minor errors prevents the essay from achieving a higher band, as they occur throughout the text, even if they do not cause significant confusion.
