Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent times, the ideal approach to fulfil the accommodation needs is to build a high rise apartment in metro cities. I strongly agree with this sentence, although I also support independent housing schemes offered in small towns.

On one hand, the shortage of land requires builders to plan housing schemes as tall apartment buildings. The reason being, increasing trends of migration among small town people towards major cities in search of jobs, business opportunities and further studies causes shortage of land to construct independent houses. The space is required in order to build basic facilities such as hospitals, supermarkets and transportation. Moreover, the universities and big companies occupy large areas in the city which contribute to a shortage in land. The only solution to this problem is to construct a high rise apartment where several families or immigrated students can live in one place.

On the other hand, the freedom and comfort offered by spacious houses cannot be compared to congested apartment blocks. The bungalow built on a large area can provide enough space for extended families, where people can have a separate garden too.

In conclusion, I am inclined to believe that the apartment buildings are the best solution for major cities in order to meet the demand of the rising population. Although the comfort, freedom and enough space offered by an independent home will be always missing.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position, but it fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, which significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the arguments regarding land scarcity and the benefits of high-rise living are relevant, they are somewhat underdeveloped. The counter-argument regarding independent housing is mentioned but lacks sufficient depth to fully explore the 'extent' of the agreement. Because the response is under-length, the depth of analysis is limited, preventing a higher score in this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On one hand', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, the transitions between ideas could be smoother, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. The overall progression of ideas is clear, but the limited length makes the structure feel somewhat abrupt. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the logical flow is maintained throughout the short text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'accommodation needs', 'migration', and 'independent housing schemes'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrasing. Some word choices, such as 'high rise apartment' (which should be pluralized or used as an adjective) and 'immigrated students', show minor inaccuracies. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise, academic collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'the ideal approach to fulfil' (should be 'fulfilling') and 'the reason being, increasing trends' (which is a sentence fragment). Subject-verb agreement and article usage are generally accurate, but there are occasional slips. While the student attempts complex sentences, the control is not consistent. The errors present do not impede communication, but they do limit the score to the 6.0 band.
