Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, the growing populations of large cities has created a significant demand for housing. Although, building tall apartment blocks can provide homes for a large number of people in a limited space. I partially agree that this is the best way because a combination of high-rise and and low-rise would be beneficial.

To commence with, constructing tall apartment blocks is an effective way to tackle housing shortages in a densely populated cities. It allows developers to accommodate hundreds of families on a relatively short piece land. Furthermore, these buildings can be constructed near workplaces, public transport which can benefit the people to commute short distances and can become convenient for the people. For example, cities such as Singapore has built vertical buildings which allows a large number of people to live comfortably and without expanding the city into surrounding areas. Therefore, constructing tall apartments can be beneficial for the society as a whole.

However, relying excessively on apartments creates social and environmental issues. High buildings can lead to overcrowding, increased pressure on elevators and public facilities. Moreover, some families particularly those with children, prefer houses with a garden because they believe it would give them greater privacy and better quality of life. For instance, if a neighbourhood consists of high-rise buildings without sufficient parks, schools and recreational areas, residents may experience congestion and have limited access to green space. Consequently, government should adopt a balanced approach by combining high-rise building with low density buildings and providing adequate public amenities.

In conclusion, although constructing tall apartments are an efficient way to provide housing for people but i do not it is only solution. A combination of high-rise apartments and low-rise buildings would be a great sustainable measure.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that is maintained throughout the essay. You acknowledge the benefits of high-rise buildings while also highlighting the social and environmental drawbacks, leading to a balanced conclusion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, such as the mention of Singapore as an example and the discussion regarding the need for public amenities. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting arguments are slightly more detailed; for instance, you could expand on how a 'balanced approach' specifically mitigates the overcrowding issues you mentioned. Overall, your response is focused and directly answers the question asked.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'Consequently' to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. While the flow is generally good, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Additionally, there are minor issues with referencing and sentence structure, such as the repetitive use of 'the people' in the second paragraph. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would help elevate this score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'densely populated', 'accommodate', 'congestion', and 'sustainable measure'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'short piece land' (should be 'short piece of land') and 'constructing tall apartments are' (should be 'is'). You also repeat certain phrases like 'tall apartment blocks' and 'the people'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise synonyms and collocations to avoid repetition and demonstrate a more sophisticated control of language, which will help you move into the higher band range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'the growing populations... has created' (subject-verb agreement error: 'populations' is plural), 'Although, building tall...' (incorrect use of 'Although' as a sentence starter), and 'government should adopt' (missing article: 'the government'). Additionally, the final sentence contains a structural error: 'i do not it is only solution'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the essay. To achieve a higher score, focus on eliminating these basic subject-verb and article errors and aim for more consistent control over complex sentence forms.
