Student answer (Band 6.0)

In contemporary world, population in metropolitan cities is rising and best way to provide residence is to construct tall buildings. This essay completely agrees with this view for the following reasons.

One of the major reasons why I agree is that tall buildings can be constructed in smaller plots as the homes will provided on floors. This is beneficial for both citizens and the government, as less land is required for construction. Because metropolitan areas have limited available land, building traditional villas and bungalows consumes too much space, ultimately leading to severe housing shortages. Therefore, building huge skyscrapers will be better for the government and a large corporation. For instance, last year in Dubai the higher authority build more than 50 tall residence apartments in order to provide homes to people due to migration of people from other countries.

Another reason why building high apartment blocks is that they are cheaper than huge mansions or villas, which is better for citizens. They can buy home for their family in cheaper rates as property prices are rising day by day that is why buying an apartment is advantageous for them. One of the best examples of this are developing countries such as India, every year property prices are increasing; so, the government built huge buildings for poor financial families where 10 to 14 floors apartments were built in urban area and prices were reasonable for them.

In conclusion, I completely agree with this statement because tall flats can be constructed in available small space and prices are also reasonable of this, which is beneficial for local people as well as for immigrants.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt clearly, maintaining a consistent position throughout. The arguments regarding land efficiency and affordability are relevant and supported by examples from Dubai and India. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the discussion on 'cheaper rates' could be more nuanced by considering the long-term maintenance costs or the social impact of high-density living. While the task is fully addressed, the supporting points lack the depth required for a higher band, as the explanations remain somewhat repetitive and rely on generalisations rather than detailed analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'One of the major reasons', 'Therefore', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there is occasional awkwardness in the flow of ideas, such as the transition between the benefits for the government and the benefits for corporations. The referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the examples and the main arguments could be smoother to improve the overall progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'metropolitan', 'residence', and 'migration'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'higher authority' instead of 'local government' or 'urban planning authorities', and 'huge buildings' which is a bit simplistic. Collocations are generally functional but lack the sophistication or precision expected at higher levels. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning without difficulty, but it does not demonstrate a wide range of less common items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('in contemporary world', 'in urban area'), verb forms ('the higher authority build' instead of 'built'), and preposition usage. There are also some awkward phrasings, such as 'prices are also reasonable of this'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate more control over complex structures and reduce the frequency of basic grammatical slips.
