To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is argued that large cities should construct tall apartment blocks to provide enough homes to the residents. This essay agrees with that statement because tall buildings can accommodate more people and these buildings can also prevent urban expansion and preserve land for other essential facilities.

The tall buildings can provide accommodation to several people as they can contain numerous apartments blocks in a limited space. The vertical construction on limited urban land ensures more housing for locals and helps us meet the rising housing demand. For example, a tall building in a city will only occupy a limited space and it will accommodate thousands of locals hence it will be solving a rising issue of housing crisis.

One more strong reason is that such buildings can also prevent excessive urban expansion. Because these tall buildings only take limited urban land, they leave more space for other facilities. For example, multiple essential facilities such as parks, hospitals and schools can be constructed. We can also utilise the other space for widening city roads. This is why cities like Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are constructing and building such apartments blocks to meet rising issue of housing-crises.

In conclusion, the construction of tall apartments buildings can provide more homes for people to live while leaving more space for other facilities. This strategy will not only help meet the demand of housing market but will also assist us construct an efficient infrastructure. Therefore, I believe that construction of this kind of infrastructure should be encouraged in bigger cities to provide more homes to residents.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding space efficiency and urban planning are relevant and logically developed. However, the development is somewhat repetitive; for instance, the idea of 'limited space' is mentioned in every paragraph. To reach a higher band, you could explore counter-arguments or discuss the potential drawbacks of tall buildings, such as social isolation or infrastructure strain, to provide a more balanced and nuanced perspective. Overall, the ideas are well-supported with relevant examples, meeting the requirements for a solid response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'For example', 'One more strong reason', and 'In conclusion' effectively. However, the transition between sentences can sometimes feel a bit mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and use more sophisticated referencing (e.g., 'This approach' or 'Such a strategy') to connect ideas more fluidly across sentences rather than relying on simple conjunctions.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'urban expansion', 'infrastructure', and 'housing crisis' correctly. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive, particularly the frequent use of 'tall buildings' and 'limited space'. To achieve a higher score, aim to use more precise synonyms or collocations, such as 'high-rise developments', 'vertical density', or 'metropolitan sprawl'. While your word choice is generally accurate and does not impede communication, increasing the variety and sophistication of your lexical choices would significantly enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and error-free, though there are minor issues with article usage and pluralization, such as 'numerous apartments blocks' (should be 'apartment blocks') and 'meet rising issue of housing-crises' (should be 'the rising issue of the housing crisis'). Your control of grammar is generally good, and these minor slips do not hinder understanding. To improve, focus on ensuring consistent subject-verb agreement and refining the use of definite and indefinite articles in more complex sentence structures.
