Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that the reasonable way to provide enough homes in big cities is to construct tall apartment residential blocks. I strongly agree with the above statement as it improves development. In this essay i will discuss the reasons to support my opinion along with some relevant examples.

To begin with, The first and foremost reason to support this is less housing crisis. Nowadays, finding a place to live in city centre is difficult. As most people work there and want to live near to their job due to less homes the remaining ones listed with high prices lead to crisis. To avoid this building apartments in cities will significantly helps this problem as more places to live can lead to less rent. For example in NYC there were shortage of houses of city council builds new apartments which helps many tenants to find their home in city.

Furthermore, Another rational to support this is growth of city. Building more apartments in city will eventually helps the economy and grow the city financially as more people will invest in the real estate. For instance chicago had less residential blocks in city and the city was also in fiancial crisis as less investment coming in the city but with help of city planner they decided to build apartments in city by this chicago builds 15 new buildings that attracts cash flow in city.

To conclude, building apartments are best way to provide homes as it helps redice housing crisis and grow city economy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you provide reasons for your agreement, the supporting examples (NYC and Chicago) are vague and lack specific, credible detail, which prevents the argument from being fully developed. The essay stays on topic, but the analysis remains at a surface level. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more nuanced explanations of how tall buildings specifically solve housing crises and the potential trade-offs involved, rather than relying on generalized assertions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'To conclude' to signal the structure. However, the use of these devices is somewhat mechanical, and there are instances where the flow between sentences is slightly disjointed, such as in the second paragraph where the transition between the housing crisis and the NYC example feels abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for a higher band. You rely on repetitive phrasing, such as 'build apartments' and 'provide homes'. There are also some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'rational to support this' (should be 'rationale') and 'less housing crisis' (should be 'a reduction in the housing crisis'). While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of sophisticated or less common vocabulary limits the score. Incorporating more precise academic terminology would significantly improve your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'building apartments in cities will significantly helps' (subject-verb agreement), 'there were shortage of houses' (missing article), and 'as less investment coming in the city' (missing auxiliary verb). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with capitalization after commas and within sentences. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
