Student answer (Band 6.0)

There arises no question over the verity of this statement that to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks. I could not agree more on it owing to some well established reasons that will be discussed in upcoming paragraphs.

In the first glance, it would not be wrong to state that the large cities has shortage of land, so building vertical housing would be worth. Many people live in a close society, government can provide more services easily like water, electricity, waste collection, schools, healthcare and telecom. It can proved to be a boon in many way. For example, a residential tower can provide hundreds of the apartments whereas on the same land it can be built only a few homes.

Nevertheless, proponents argue that urban expansions can lead to a huge loss to a agricultural lands and can destroy natural habitats and farmland. It is crucial that people should save green spaces for the future. This apart, higher density buildings can be overcrowded and that can be a cause for noise, reduced a quality life and a lack of recreational areas. To illustrate, the public places like schools and healthcare facilities can become overcrowded.

At last, it can be summed up that tall apartment block are not a sole solution. The authorities should consider all the above points before reaching at a decision. I believe the government should create a society combination of tall buildings, medium-density housing, affordable housing projects and better transportation etc. to offer all the amenities for the public.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of tall apartment blocks, while also acknowledging counter-arguments. The ideas are relevant, such as land scarcity and service efficiency. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the point about 'telecom' or 'waste collection' is mentioned but not fully explained. The conclusion introduces a nuanced view that contradicts the initial strong agreement, which slightly weakens the consistency of the position. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is expanded with more detailed reasoning or specific examples rather than just listing benefits.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In the first glance', 'Nevertheless', and 'This apart', though some of these are slightly unnatural or misused (e.g., 'In the first glance' should be 'At first glance'). The progression of ideas is generally clear, moving from the benefits of vertical housing to the drawbacks and finally to a balanced conclusion. Referencing is mostly clear, though the transition between the counter-argument and the conclusion could be smoother to improve the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'verity', 'boon', and 'urban expansions'. However, there are instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'there arises no question over the verity' (unnatural phrasing), 'reduced a quality life' (incorrect article usage), and 'reaching at a decision' (incorrect preposition). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'the large cities has shortage' (subject-verb agreement), 'It can proved to be' (incorrect verb form), and 'tall apartment block are' (pluralization error). Punctuation is generally functional, but the frequency of these minor errors is noticeable. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage, as these errors occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy of the writing.
