Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often argued that most effective way to provide sufficient housing in large cities is to construct tall apartments buildings. I largely agree with this view because high rise developments can accommodate a large number of people while making efficient use of limited urban land. However , I believe they should be combined with other housing solutions.

The main paramount reason of tall apartment blocks is that they allow cities to house more people without occupying large areas of land. As urban populations continue to grow, land in major cities becomes increasingly expensive and scarce. Moreover , building upwards rather than outwards can therefore provide homes for thousands of residents while preserving valuable land for parks, roads and other public facilities. For instance, in densely populated cities such as Singapore and Hong Kong, high rise residential buildings are widely used to meet the housing needs of large populations

Another benefit is that apartment block can make public transportation more efficient. In addition, residents may have easier access to schools, hospitals , shopping centers and workplaces. This can reduce commuting distances and help control traffic congestion.

Nevertheless, relying entirely on high rise buildings could create certain problems. Large apartment complexes may become overcrowded and can offer residents less private outdoor space. They may also have contribute to social isolation if they poorly designed. Therefore , governments should also consider developing low rise housing in suitable suburban areas and improving existing residential neighbourhoods.

Conclusively, I strongly believe that constructing tall apartment blocks is one of the beast ways to address the shortage of housing in mega cities because it uses limited land efficiently and support better infrastructure.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that supports the use of tall apartment blocks while acknowledging the need for a balanced approach. Your ideas are relevant and well-supported by examples such as Singapore and Hong Kong. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are fully developed; for instance, the point about public transportation could be expanded further to explain exactly how density facilitates better infrastructure. Overall, your position is consistent throughout the essay, and the main ideas are logically presented.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Moreover', 'For instance', and 'Nevertheless', to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. One minor improvement would be to ensure that the transition between the benefits of transportation and the potential drawbacks of high-rise living is slightly smoother to enhance the flow of the argument. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision, using terms like 'densely populated', 'urban land', and 'social isolation'. There are occasional minor errors, such as 'main paramount reason' (which is redundant) and 'beast ways' (a typo for 'best'). While you use some less common items, increasing your use of more sophisticated collocations or academic phrases would help elevate your score. The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear, though there are occasional errors in grammar and punctuation, such as 'apartment block can' (should be plural 'blocks') and 'have contribute' (should be 'have contributed'). Additionally, there are some minor spacing issues before punctuation marks. Despite these slips, your control of grammar is generally good, and the errors do not cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage.
