Student answer (Band 6.0)

In contemporary society, the excellent way of providing houses for citizens is to construct enormous buildings in urban areas. From my perspective, I strongly believe that this stance has a positive impact on different areas of life and society. This essay will explain why this position is justified with some reasons and multiple examples.

One of the main reasons supporting my view is that the construction of tall apartment plays a vital role in protecting an additional land. In other words, instead of building separate homes for each household, the high-rise residential buildings must be built to facilitate every resident by saving more area in urban cities. For instance, the real estate builders frequently construct residential skyscrapers on a piece of land such as 500sqkm or 1000sqkm by establishing more flats and floors on a specific part of the land. Consequently, the tall apartments contribute in providing considerable accommodation for everyone by saving extra land which can be used to construct other facilities for citizens such as parks, public libraries, and shopping centres.

Another compelling reason for my viewpoint is that immense residential buildings not only assist in settling more population in a particular building, however it also helps in alleviating expenses of local suppliers. For example, the construction of one tall building is beneficial for water and electricity providers to facilitate a water connection and one transformer for whole building rather than installing more connections which becomes more expensive for both the consumers and suppliers. Subsequently, creating an affordable lifestyle and efficient living of individuals in urban cities.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that the construction of tall apartment blocks in urban areas brings several significant benefits which includes the affordability of construction and protecting more area to establish other amenities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. The arguments regarding land conservation and infrastructure efficiency are relevant and logically developed. However, the essay could be improved by providing more specific, real-world examples rather than hypothetical scenarios (e.g., mentioning a specific city like Singapore or Hong Kong). While the ideas are well-supported, the development is somewhat repetitive in the second paragraph. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of the task by presenting a clear argument and supporting it with coherent reasoning, fitting the criteria for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'In other words,' 'For instance,' and 'Consequently' are used effectively to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments. However, there are minor instances where the flow could be smoother; for example, the transition in the second paragraph ('not only... however it also') is grammatically awkward and slightly disrupts the cohesion. Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision, using terms like 'contemporary society,' 'residential skyscrapers,' and 'alleviating expenses.' There are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'protecting an additional land' instead of 'preserving land' or 'facilitate every resident' where 'accommodate' would be more precise. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks the sophistication and flexibility required for a higher band score. The errors in word choice do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of the argument.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the construction of tall apartment plays' (missing plural 'apartments'), 'not only... however it also' (incorrect correlative conjunction usage), and 'which includes the affordability' (subject-verb agreement error with 'benefits'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not significantly impede the reader's understanding. The student shows an attempt at complex structures, but the control over these structures is inconsistent. More attention to subject-verb agreement and correct conjunction usage would improve the accuracy.
