Student answer (Band 6.0)

Large cities are home to many people across the country. Though, big cities do not have enough accomodations for all. Some argue that big apartment buildings are better, whereas others believe in spacious bunglows.I agree to a large extent that the best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks. There are compelling reasons to support this argument

Firstly, tall apartment buildings do not require a lot of space on land, and can easily accomodate a lot of people in one block. This makes sure that we use the land to its maximum potential while leaving space for other important causes. Building skyscrappers is a the best way to provide enough homes in a city where there is no available space to live. For an instance, large cities like Mumbai do not have enough space to build more houses. Building tall apartment blocks makes it easier to find more place for people to live in. Due to lack of space, some are forced to live in slums.

Moreover, living in a community, in an apartment is much cheaper and cost effective than houses. It also helps save water and electricity, as a whole community. Though it is not easy to implement these, the government should take initiatives and help. The local government can collaborate with constructors or engineers and build them in order to accomodate more people in large cities.

Taking everything into account, large cities are a magnet for people looking for opportunities and hence tends to be overcrowded. This is why the best way to provide enough homes in big cities is to build tall apartment blocks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. The main ideas—land efficiency and cost-effectiveness—are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of Mumbai. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding water and electricity savings is mentioned but not fully explained or linked back to the core argument of housing density. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your supporting points with more detailed analysis or evidence to ensure the ideas are fully developed rather than just stated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. You use some cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Taking everything into account' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel a bit repetitive. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid, particularly when moving from the problem of space to the proposed solution of government collaboration.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'compelling reasons', 'maximum potential', and 'collaborate'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'accomodations' (accommodations), 'bunglows' (bungalows), 'skyscrappers' (skyscrapers), and 'accomodate' (accommodate). These errors are noticeable but do not impede overall communication. To achieve a higher score, focus on accuracy in spelling and try to incorporate more precise, less common vocabulary related to urban planning, such as 'urban density', 'infrastructure', or 'sustainable development'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'a the best way' (extra article), 'tends to be' (subject-verb agreement error with 'cities'), and 'For an instance' (incorrect idiom). Punctuation is generally functional, though some sentences could be refined for better flow. To improve, focus on eliminating minor errors in articles and subject-verb agreement, and aim to use a wider variety of complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses or passive voice, with greater precision.
