Student answer (Band 6.0)

Owning a house these days has become a big responsibility and necessity. The value of houses have increased over these years rapidly with a handful of uncertainty. And incase of mega cities like Mumbai and Bangalore, it becomes pretty costly. These mega cities are known for its rapid growth and development across all the sectors including housing costs and various settlements. One major problem faced by these large cities are lack of land. And, this problem introduces us to the concept of building apartments.

So, I agree with the statement provided in the question, that is, "The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.". The main advantages of these type of residencies are: they require less land, can extend up to 40 to 50 floors, which has capacity to reside approximately 640 people in one building. Additionally, they provide extra amenities such as Gym, Theatre, Swimming pool, Children's park, etc. Furthermore, the best benefit of this housing is that, it solves the problem of lack of land and not enough homes to provide to people.

One example which I experienced was, when I lived in Malaysia, where I could see only tall skyscrapers, and buildings and nothing else. I was shocked to see how efficient and comfortable it felt living at 8th floor of a tall building in a large city, Kuala Lumpur. There were no questions on how spacious the homes were in that apartments solving the problem of apartments houses not being spacious and easy to access. Lifts were the best way to reach any floor saving our time climbing staircases.

So, in conclusion I would say that apartments have helped the humans in settling easily, especially incase of large cities where there are problems regarding availability of land.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed the prompt and maintained a clear position throughout. The ideas regarding land scarcity and the benefits of high-rise living are relevant. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, while you mention amenities and efficiency, you could have explored the potential drawbacks (such as social isolation or infrastructure strain) to provide a more balanced and nuanced argument, which is expected for higher bands. The response is well-structured, but the supporting examples, particularly the personal anecdote about Malaysia, could be more deeply integrated into the argument to demonstrate a stronger analytical approach.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' to link your ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive. The transition between the general argument and the personal example in the third paragraph is a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, which helps the reader follow your line of reasoning. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the progression between sentences is smoother and less formulaic.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'mega cities', 'amenities', and 'skyscrapers'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'reside approximately 640 people' (should be 'accommodate') and 'apartments houses' (redundant). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. You tend to rely on simpler phrasing, and some expressions feel slightly informal or unnatural. Expanding your range to include more academic collocations and precise terminology would significantly enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('The value of houses have increased', 'One major problem... are lack of land') and minor punctuation or article errors ('at 8th floor', 'in case of'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they are persistent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent use of articles and prepositions. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy is key to moving up.
