Student answer (Band 6.0)

Constructing tall buildings have become an increasingly common nowadays, while it is widely believed that the best approach to meet the demand of accommodation is by building tall apartment blocks. I firmly agree with that viewpoint because tall apartments save space and meet the growing demand of accommodation.

One of the main reasons I believe building tall buildings provide enough places for residents is that it allow people to save valuable space, especially in the large cities because cities are becoming crowded due to heavy migration from countryside people. Individuals migrate to cities to experience better access pubic facilities such as healthcare, education and transportation system in order to improve their lifestyle. As a result, population in large cities are rising which contribute to over population. For instance, in Mumbai, population has boosted in last decade due to heavy migration which contributing to lack of accommodation facilities and over crowding. Therefore, the best approach to meet the demand of growing housing is by building tall apartments.

Another effective issue is solved by tall building is that it save a lot of space for other construction such as hospitals, schools and roads. In addition, saving space by building tall buildings can improve the living standard of individuals by accessing better facilities. To exemplify, citizens may experience a better view from the top of the building or have an enough parking space. Consequently, housing may be available at cheaper cost with a higher living standards. Hence, building tall apartments save plenty of space in large cities.

In conclusion, building tall apartments solve the problem of accommodation. I strongly agree with the statement as building tall buildings help to meet the growing demand of housing at lower prices.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of tall apartment blocks. The ideas are relevant, focusing on space efficiency and urban migration. However, the development is somewhat repetitive; the argument that tall buildings 'save space' is stated in both body paragraphs without significant extension or nuance. While the example of Mumbai is relevant, the explanation of how tall buildings specifically solve the housing crisis could be more detailed. The position is consistent throughout, but the depth of analysis is limited, which prevents it from reaching the higher bands.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'One of the main reasons', 'In addition', and 'Consequently' are used to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'Another effective issue is solved by tall building'. Additionally, there are some issues with referencing; for example, the phrase 'that viewpoint' in the introduction refers back to the prompt, but the flow between sentences could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, but the cohesion lacks the flexibility required for a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'accommodation', 'migration', and 'over population'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'population has boosted' (should be 'increased' or 'risen') and 'another effective issue is solved' (which is logically confusing). The range of vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the message, but it lacks the precision and sophistication needed for a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Constructing tall buildings have become', 'population in large cities are rising') and article usage errors ('from countryside people'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. The control over complex structures is inconsistent, and the punctuation is generally functional but basic.
