Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, population has increased in major cities, so, there is a huge need for homes for this people. Some individuals argue that the best approach is to build tall buildings to fullfill the reqirement of homes. I partly agree with this view.

On the one hand, there are some reasons why large apartment blocks is needed to provide sufficient homes for individuals in cities. To begin with, people are migrating to well-developed cities to seek better living as cities provide huge smart facilities, some individuals staying in urban areas for their study or work purposes. As a result, the overall percentage of population is increasing in a large number. So, the need of apartments has also increased. The long buildings are the viable solution to this housing problem as a tall vertical building can provide a lot of apartments in one insfrustracture without using a large field. Therefore, a huge quantity of tall apartment blocks are the most effective solution because those infrustractures use short fields, however, provide a plenty of flats where domestic units can live. For instance, in Dhaka city, most of the buildings are vertically tall at least ten-storey because of the millions of people and hundreds of families can live in one building.

On the other hand, there are some issues of long blocks. Firstly, building tall infrustracture could be risky for individuals in emergency situation such as earthquake. Such calamities can lead to major problems even a large number of deaths, this huge population cannot evacuate from those buildings because of the long paths of stairs and the huge crowd as more individuals would live in one building. Moreover, some places do not have enough soil power to hold those huge buildings, there is a chance of destruction in those locations.

I believe that a balanced approach of vertical and horizontal buildings is needed to solve the housing issues because long blocks can only provide enough apartments but there is a lack of safety.

In conclusion, although building longer blocks can save space and provide significant number of homes for the general populace, there is a concern for safety measures.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the advantages and disadvantages of tall apartment blocks. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout. The ideas are relevant, such as space efficiency and safety concerns regarding earthquakes. However, some points are under-developed; for instance, the argument about 'soil power' is a good point but lacks specific elaboration. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explained with more depth. The conclusion effectively summarizes your balanced view, ensuring the task requirements are met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'To begin with', and 'Moreover' to signal transitions between ideas. However, some of these devices are used in a slightly mechanical way, and there are instances where the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the benefits of tall buildings and the specific example of Dhaka is a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring they connect ideas more naturally would enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'migrating', 'viable solution', and 'populace'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'fullfill', 'reqirement', 'insfrustracture', and 'infrustracture', which occur repeatedly. These errors indicate a lack of precision. While you attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary, the repetition of certain words and the spelling inaccuracies limit your score. To improve, focus on mastering the spelling of common academic terms and try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms to avoid repeating basic words like 'huge' or 'long'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('population has increased', 'apartment blocks is needed', 'hundreds of families can live') and awkward phrasing ('soil power', 'long paths of stairs'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your main points, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency. To improve, pay closer attention to pluralization and subject-verb agreement, and try to vary your sentence structures further by using more complex subordinating clauses.
