Student answer (Band 6.0)

The problem of overcrowding in major cities around the world is a major concern for many governments. To tackle that problem many people have suggested to build tall apartment blocks, while other suggest that these apartment blocks can bring other problems with them. In my view, construction of these apartment complex can reduce the stress on the city's outskirts suburb areas.

By constructed tall apartment complexes, the people who in the city will be able to live closer to their workplace rather than commuting hours by car or buses, more and more people will have more energy since they don't have to wake up early hence being more productive at work. Another benefit, would be that the rent will decrease since there are more options to rent in the city which will save people a lot of money. If more apartments buildings are constructed then a lot of businesses will open near those buildings such as supermarkets, barber stores and retail stores which will lead to more employment.

On the other hand, building apartment complexes can be extremely dangerous for the construction workers and the people walking by the construction site, if some heavy material is accidently dropped from some height it could cause some injuries to the people walking by. Another problem would be for the kids, since they won't have a background or any playground in the complex they will be missing out on physical activities such as playing sports. If a earthquake came to the city and the buildings collapse then it could take hundreds if not thousands of lives.

In conclusion, I believe that if building are built safely with public places where children can play and be able to handle earthquakes then there aren't any drawbacks to building them as they provide more houses for people living in the city at a cheaper rate.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of tall apartment blocks. The ideas are relevant, such as reduced commuting times and economic benefits. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The arguments regarding safety and earthquakes in the third paragraph are a bit simplistic and lack depth, focusing more on hypothetical risks rather than urban planning solutions. While the position is consistent, the supporting arguments could be more sophisticated to reach a higher band. Overall, the response covers all parts of the task, but the development of ideas is somewhat limited.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a basic progression of ideas from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'Another benefit', 'On the other hand', 'Another problem'). The transition between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother to improve the flow. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the internal cohesion lacks the flexibility and variety expected at higher levels.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks range and precision. The student relies on common, everyday language (e.g., 'big', 'problem', 'good'). There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'background' when referring to a playground or outdoor space, and 'barber stores' instead of 'barbershops'. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of more sophisticated or academic vocabulary prevents the essay from achieving a higher score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'By constructed tall apartment complexes' (incorrect verb form), 'the people who in the city' (missing verb), and 'If a earthquake came' (incorrect article). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma splices. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable and suggest a lack of control over more complex grammatical forms.
