Student answer (Band 4.5)
There is ongoing debate that a large proportion of individuals migrate from rural to urban areas have become a grave issue due to lack of accommodation. The ideal solution to overcome this issue is to provide sufficient living space by constructing vertical buildings. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response is significantly under the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, as it contains only 71 words. Because the essay is incomplete and stops abruptly after the introduction, it fails to develop any arguments or provide supporting examples. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed, and the position is not fully developed. To improve, you must ensure you complete the essay by providing at least two body paragraphs with supporting evidence and a clear conclusion, adhering to the minimum length requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
Due to the extremely limited length, it is difficult to assess your ability to organize ideas or use cohesive devices effectively. The introduction shows a basic attempt at logical progression by stating the issue and your position, but the text ends before any cohesive structure can be established. To achieve a higher band, you need to write full paragraphs that use linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in contrast') to connect your ideas logically and ensure the essay flows smoothly from one point to the next.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally appropriate for the topic, such as 'ongoing debate', 'migrate', and 'vertical buildings'. However, the range is very limited due to the brevity of the text. There are no significant errors in word choice, but there is no opportunity to demonstrate the use of less common or idiomatic vocabulary. To improve, aim to incorporate a wider range of topic-specific vocabulary and collocations related to urban planning and housing solutions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The sentences produced are grammatically sound, such as 'The ideal solution to overcome this issue is to provide sufficient living space by constructing vertical buildings.' However, the range of structures is limited. The text consists of only a few sentences, preventing an assessment of your ability to use a variety of complex grammatical structures. To improve, focus on integrating a mix of simple, compound, and complex sentences, and ensure that your punctuation and verb tenses remain accurate throughout a longer piece of writing.
