Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is a perception building in many people's minds that tall apartment block can resolve the issue of homelessness in the big cities. I wholeheartedly concur with this idea. Following essay will lineate the key justifications for my stance supported with some pertinent examples.

Large cities are expanding rigorously because many rural residents have been moving to metropolitan cities in search of better lifestyle. If this expansions continues on the recent rate, there will be less ground left for agriculture. Moreover, most of the habitat for wildlife may lose. For instance, Margalla Hills National Park in Islamabad is housing many rare and indigenous species of animals including leopards. However, increasing population and extensive development in the surrounding areas has been destroying the ecosystem. Cities like Islamabad spreading into a megacity is definitely causing threat to surrounding environment and wildlife. Therefore, a more sustainable approach is needed just like growth of cities upwards instead of in all directions.

Additionally, a city with tall buildings and small ground will be easily manageable. Every citizen may have an easy access to all available resources as compared to a city spread out to miles in all directions. One of the best examples of such management would Tokyo which is a metropolitan with more than 20 million population. Yet city is managed extravagantly. It was one of the first cities to adopt tall buildings approach for growing population and their strategy appeared to be quite successful. This example depicts that every megacity must use this approach to tackle with burst of people moving towards bigs cities.

In conclusion, construction of tall building apartments instead of new homes can be a sustainable approach for growing population in large cities. This will not only deal with an alarming increase in residents but also provide a long lasting and environmentally friendly solution for risks like population bloom.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. You have provided relevant arguments regarding environmental sustainability and urban management. The ideas are extended with specific examples, such as the Margalla Hills National Park and Tokyo. However, the development could be more nuanced; for instance, you could have briefly acknowledged potential drawbacks of high-rise living to provide a more balanced perspective, which would strengthen the argument further. Overall, the task is well-addressed, and the position is clear and supported.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Additionally', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and flow, such as 'Following essay will lineate' (missing 'The') and 'Yet city is managed' (missing 'the'). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, contributing to the overall coherence of the piece.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including terms like 'metropolitan', 'sustainable', and 'indigenous'. There are some instances of awkward word choice or minor errors, such as 'lineate' (likely meant 'delineate'), 'bigs cities' (pluralization error), and 'extravagantly' (which does not fit the context of city management). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, these occasional inaccuracies prevent the score from reaching the higher bands. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'tall apartment block' (should be plural), 'most of the habitat for wildlife may lose' (should be passive voice), and 'Cities like Islamabad spreading' (fragmented structure). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are missing articles throughout the text. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the reader's understanding of your arguments. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences would help improve this score.
