Student answer (Band 5.0)

Due to the continuous increase in population in big cities, the demand for housing also increased. Many people believe that building tall apartments blocks is the best approach to provide maximum houses. Although this might create some environmental issues, i strongly agree with this statement because it used less space and more organised societies can be built.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response is significantly under-length at only 85 words, failing to meet the 250-word minimum requirement. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed. While you establish a clear position in the introduction, the essay stops abruptly after the first paragraph, meaning the ideas are severely underdeveloped and the argument remains incomplete. To improve, you must expand your response by providing fully developed supporting arguments, relevant examples, and a clear conclusion to ensure all parts of the prompt are addressed thoroughly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is too short to demonstrate a full range of cohesive devices or effective paragraphing. While there is a basic attempt at logical progression in the opening paragraph, the abrupt ending prevents any assessment of overall structure or the use of linking words to connect ideas across a full essay. To reach a higher band, you need to write a complete essay with clear paragraph breaks and a variety of cohesive devices (such as 'furthermore', 'consequently', or 'in contrast') to guide the reader through your arguments.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the limited content provided, but it lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You use basic terms like 'big cities' and 'many people believe'. There is an attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary such as 'environmental issues' and 'organised societies', but the limited length prevents you from demonstrating a wider or more sophisticated lexical range. Focus on incorporating more precise, academic collocations to express your ideas more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writing contains several grammatical errors that affect the flow. For example, 'it used less space' should be 'it uses less space' (tense consistency), and 'towering apartments occupied less area' should be 'occupy less area'. The sentence fragment 'Which means that more space is available for other' is also grammatically incomplete. While you attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, the frequency of errors and the lack of length make it difficult to award a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring all sentences are complete.
