Student answer (Band 7.0)

Many individuals believe that building tall apartment blocks in large urban areas is the most effective way to provide enough homes for citizens. This issue is a subject of ongoing debate, as it carries both positive and negative effects. However, I firmly agree that the positive impacts of tall apartments can clearly outweigh the drawbacks.

Due to rapid economic growth and urbanization, many people have decided to migrate to cities. Therefore, building apartment blocks is the best plan to manage crowded cities. This is because, unlike traditional houses with big yards, tall apartment blocks take up less land, making them an ideal choice for busy urban areas with growing populations. For example, in Yangon, the capital of Myanmar, the city has been facing with urban housing shortage; thus, apartment buildings offer convenient, multiple living spaces for many citizens within a small land area.

However, the negative impacts of tall apartment blocks, such as a lack of human connection, should not be ignored. Unlike traditional houses where people can interact and communicate with neighbors, small rooms separate people from their neighborhoods, leading to depression from loneliness. Nevertheless, this drawback could be minimized by well-designed infrastructure, such as building lobbies, libraries, and parks where people can communicate with each other properly.

In conclusion, even though tall apartment buildings are an effective solution for urban housing shortages, the resulting impacts on mental health from loneliness should not be neglected. However, with the help of precise and systematic solutions, such as building shared lobbies, this problem can be managed well. Therefore, I believe that high-rise apartments are the best solution.

The candidate provides relevant reasons and examples, such as the situation in Yangon. However, the development of arguments could be enhanced by presenting more examples or a deeper analysis of the drawbacks regarding mental health, which would strengthen the overall argumentation. Overall, the task achievement is consistent and demonstrates a clear position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

Coherence and cohesion are generally good, with logical paragraphing and use of linking words like 'however,' 'due to,' and 'in conclusion.' The response flows well, but the transition between ideas could be improved, particularly when discussing the drawbacks. For instance, the point about the negative impacts could be better tied back to the solution offered in a more cohesive manner. Overall, the organization is effective, leading to comprehensible ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The lexical resource is quite strong, employing appropriate vocabulary such as 'urbanization,' 'effective,' and 'infrastructure.' However, there are minor inaccuracies, such as 'facing with urban housing shortage' which should be 'facing urban housing shortages.' Additional varied vocabulary could be utilized to convey points more effectively, for instance, using terms like 'facilitate' instead of 'offer'. Overall, the lexical resource demonstrates a good range but has room for improvement.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

Grammatical range and accuracy are satisfactory, with a mix of simple and complex sentences. There are a few grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the city has been facing with urban housing shortage,' which would be better as 'the city has been facing an urban housing shortage.' Some punctuation issues also arise throughout the essay. Still, the overall structure is sound and conveys meaning effectively, indicating a reasonable command of grammar.
