Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued that the most effective way to accommodate people in large cities is by building apartment blocks. While houses remain suitable for certain families and offer more privacy, I totally agree with this view, because apartment buildings use land more efficiently and make public services more accessible.

It is a fact that for a certain group of people houses are the best way to live as they provide privacy and comfort. However, when we talk about providing living space in metropolitan areas to a large number of individuals, making a house for each person is not the efficient way to do it. As we know land in metropolis is costly. For instance, if we have to give 100 people a living space. It's better to make building with 3 stories and 100 rooms on a single piece of land. Because, it will be hard to find this much land as in big cities there are offices, industries and recreational areas. It will be expensive too.

One more thing that support my opinion is the ease that we will have in apartment buildings. The ease to provide different services. When there is only one building to handle. It will be very facile to provide public services like cleaning, laundry, internet and food mess etc. For example, if we provided 100 houses to 100 people, providing each of them with these services would have become a headache for us. On the contrary, we can simply build one management team for one block that can handle all the apartments there.

In conclusion, despite the benefits houses offer, constructing high-rise apartment buildings is the best way to maximise land use, as they accommodate more people in a relatively small area and improve daily life by providing access to numerous facilities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed the prompt clearly, taking a firm stance and supporting it with relevant arguments regarding land efficiency and service management. Your position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant, though the development could be more sophisticated. For instance, the example of '100 people' is a good start, but you could further explore the socio-economic implications of high-density living to reach a higher band. You have covered all parts of the task well, and the conclusion effectively summarises your main points without introducing new information.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'However', 'For instance', and 'On the contrary' to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences is smoother; some sentences feel slightly disjointed, such as 'It is a fact that for a certain group of people houses are the best way to live'. Using more varied referencing and linking phrases would help the flow of ideas feel more natural and less mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'metropolitan areas', 'accommodate', and 'maximise'. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'food mess' (which is not standard English in this context) and 'facile' (which is often used in a negative sense of 'oversimplified' rather than 'easy'). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations related to urban planning would enhance your score. Your spelling is generally accurate, and your word choice is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as 'making a house for each person is not the efficient way' (should be 'an efficient way') and 'One more thing that support my opinion' (should be 'supports'). Additionally, there are some punctuation issues, such as sentence fragments like 'For instance, if we have to give 100 people a living space.' These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the score. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you move into the higher bands.
