IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
We are here to discuss the statement about the apartment or tall buildings to cope up with the life in a metropolitan city.
I partially agree with the statement since flat/apartment system works for most of the population in a city. However, some people prioritising privacy might pose a disagreement towards the statement.
Apartments are multiple-storey home units on one piece of land. It is a great use of a single plot accomodating numerous families or individuals. One of the greatest benefits of living in an apartment is the security. The security person at the gate guards all the home units simultaneously. Besides, other home owners especially on the same floor also behave like the same family member. They are mostly there when one needs their help.
Apartment life is typical of a city life. People socialise and stay connected with others more often.
Conversely, a high proportion of people are against the apartment life. They argue that living in a singular flat block might compromise their privacy. They'll always be heard and reached by the people next door. Furthermore, any event in someone's unit in an apartment or it's compound area can be greatly disliked by some flat owners.
It is said that it's neither an apartment's floor nor roof that is yours. To some extent, the claim is not false.
It is fair to conclude that although apartment blocks are a great way to accommodate the ever increasing population especially in cities, some people discourage living in and entirely building an apartment mainly due to the privacy invasion reason.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the advantages and disadvantages of tall apartment blocks. You clearly state your position in the introduction. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention security and socialisation as benefits, these points are not fully extended with concrete examples or deeper analysis. Similarly, the counter-argument regarding privacy is mentioned but remains superficial. To reach a higher band, you should provide more detailed explanations or specific examples of how urban planning affects living standards. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and does not fully synthesise the arguments presented.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Conversely', 'Besides', and 'Furthermore' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel abrupt. For example, the transition between the benefits of security and the social aspect of apartment life could be smoother. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear; the phrase 'the claim is not false' refers back to a vague idea rather than a specific point. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring a more natural progression of ideas would enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'metropolitan', 'accommodating', and 'privacy invasion'. However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice and awkward phrasing, such as 'cope up with the life' (should be 'cope with') and 'flat/apartment system'. The use of 'behave like the same family member' is also slightly unnatural. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, you need to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and less common lexical items to move into the higher bands. Focus on using words in their correct context to avoid minor inaccuracies.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'some people prioritising privacy might pose a disagreement towards the statement' (awkward phrasing) and 'it's compound area' (incorrect use of possessive 'its'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of possessive pronouns, and try to vary your sentence structures further to demonstrate greater control.
