Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is believed that in order to accommodate the growing population in the big cities, the best possible solution is to construct high rise buildings. I highly agree with this statement.
The number of people living in the large urban areas is ever growing. This huge population will require housing arrangements. However, the land is limited and homes cannot be increased indefinitely as the number of people increases. Therefore, the best way to utilize this limited portion of land is to increase the apartments vertically. In many developed countries, such as Singapore, Japan, the USA, the UK are building sky scrappers, high rise buildings more than before for tackling the population.
The large cities are usually crowded with people as those cities can offer better opportunities in the education, health and job sectors. As a result, a huge accommodation problem has arisen. In order to provide enough homes for all the people, building tall apartment blocks can not be avoided as it will house large number of people in a small block of land. For instances, if a high rise building is constructed over two homes which were used by two families, that building will provide homes to almost one hundred families which is fifty times more.
Overall, the efficient solution to the accommodation situation in the large cities is to develop tall buildings which will house a good number of people at the same area. In this way, I believe that the housing problem can be mitigated over the urban areas.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. The arguments regarding land scarcity and urban density are relevant and logically supported. However, the development is somewhat repetitive, and the examples provided (e.g., listing countries like the UK and USA) are a bit general. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific, nuanced analysis of the potential drawbacks of high-rise living, such as social isolation or infrastructure strain, to demonstrate a more balanced and comprehensive exploration of the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'As a result', and 'For instances' are present, though some are used slightly mechanically. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, but the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be more fluid to better connect the concept of urban growth with the specific solution of vertical housing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'accommodate', 'mitigated', and 'urban areas'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'sky scrappers' (should be 'skyscrapers') and 'in the education, health and job sectors' (the 'the' is unnecessary here). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Focusing on more precise collocations and avoiding minor spelling errors will improve this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as 'the land is limited' (should be 'land is limited') and 'the UK are building' (should be 'the UK is building'). Additionally, 'For instances' should be 'For instance'. While you attempt complex sentences, the control is inconsistent. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex structures while refining subject-verb agreement will help you achieve a higher band.
