Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is argued that high-rise building are effective solutions to provide homes in megacities. I agree to some extent with the given perspective because tall apartment building can accommodates a large number of people on limited land. However, I believe that other types of housing should also developed to create a balance and liveable cities.

On the one hand, the primary reason why I believe constructing multi-storey buildings in metropolitan cities is that they provide a sufficient housing on limited urban lands. Moreover, it also allows families to live together in small area because building a detached house on vacant block becomes more expensive and rarer. Furthermore, it becomes easier for the government to provide housing for large number of people in megacities while using limited green land. As a result, it also helps meet the housing crisis and helps protect the environment.

Another benefits of creating high-rise apartments in large cities is that they provide easy access to essential services such as workplace, schools, and shopping centre. Hence, people can save time for commuting. For instance, the Melbourne is surrounded by tall building and main hub of companies, as a result, people can effortlessly commute to their workplace and save time.

Despite these advantages, if people concentrate on one area it will become overcrowded and noisy. Therefore, to balance the infrastructure urban planner should also build horizonal housing in metropolis cities. Additionally, some people like to live in private properties especially if they have young children. People want their own private house with all amenities such as swimming pool and gym. which they can’t share with everyone. For example, people can enjoy with their children in their private pool without any interruption of outsiders.

In conclusion, I agree with the given statement that building tall apartments are one of the best solutions to accommodate a large number people on limited area. Nevertheless, they should also focus on other infrastructure to create a comfortable and sustainable solution.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all parts of the prompt and maintained a clear position throughout. Your introduction establishes your stance, and the body paragraphs provide relevant arguments for both the benefits of high-rise buildings and the need for alternative housing options. The ideas are generally well-developed, though some points, such as the example of Melbourne, could be more precisely linked to the argument. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting examples are fully integrated into the argument rather than just mentioned. Overall, the response is balanced and directly answers the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'Moreover,' 'Furthermore,' and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different aspects of your argument. However, there are minor issues with referencing and flow, such as the slightly abrupt transition in the final paragraph. Additionally, some cohesive devices are used in a somewhat mechanical way. Improving the variety and sophistication of your linking phrases will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including terms like 'megacities,' 'metropolitan,' 'infrastructure,' and 'sustainable.' There are some instances of word-choice errors, such as 'building a detached house on vacant block' (should be 'a vacant block') and 'horizonal housing' (should be 'horizontal'). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, there are occasional inaccuracies in collocation. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations and ensure that your word forms are consistently accurate throughout the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'high-rise building are' (should be 'buildings are'), 'should also developed' (should be 'should also be developed'), and 'the Melbourne is' (should be 'Melbourne is'). Additionally, there are some punctuation issues, such as the sentence fragment 'which they can’t share with everyone.' While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and passive voice construction will be beneficial.
