Student answer (Band 6.5)

Due to increase in urbanization the demand of residential areas is increasing . To overcome this problem, building tall apartments is considered a solution. It is a great approach to help a larger population to settle in a small area as there is lack of availability in spare ground in cities.

Cities have expanded its edges far from there centers in order to accumulate the urban settlers who come in search of jobs and opportunities. This results in massive deforestation and conversion of rural areas into sub-urbs. In order to avoid harm to nature building can be extended vertically instead of spreading infrastructure on ground. Living in a same building with multiple other families also promotes a sense of community and belongingness. It is easier for middle-class families to buy apartments in a building than buying land and building house. The apartments are also built keeping in mind the modern compact family thus numerous families can thrive on a single floor setting an example of proper utilization of resources.

Tall living complexes may result in poor mental and physical health amongst a lot because of disconnection to the outer environment. people who live on upper floors rarely tend to go for walks or do gardening because of limited access. Such tall buildings also pose a great threat to environment due to high carbon emission and use of high voltage power generating equipments in a consigned area.

There are numerous disadvantages of having tall apartment blocks but in order to preserve nature and cater a large number of people it is a better option.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt by presenting a clear position in favor of tall apartment blocks. The ideas are relevant, such as the preservation of nature and the economic benefits for middle-class families. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While the environmental and social arguments are introduced, they could be further extended with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The conclusion is brief but effectively summarizes the stance. Overall, the response covers all parts of the task well, though the depth of argumentation remains at a functional level rather than a fully developed one.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In order to', 'Such tall buildings', and 'There are numerous disadvantages', which help link the sentences. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more precise in places (e.g., 'amongst a lot' is vague). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the advantages and disadvantages, contributing to a coherent overall structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'urbanization', 'deforestation', and 'consigned area', though 'consigned' is used incorrectly here (likely meaning 'confined'). Some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'rarely tend to go' or 'massive deforestation'. While the range is sufficient to convey the message, more precise word choices and better control over collocations would elevate the score. The errors do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Cities have expanded its edges' (subject-verb agreement), 'in a same building' (article usage), and 'cater a large number' (missing preposition 'to'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are minor issues with spacing and capitalization. While the writer attempts complex sentences, the frequency of errors prevents the writing from being considered consistently accurate. However, these errors rarely impede the reader's understanding of the main points.
