Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the advantages and disadvantages of tall apartment blocks. However, the position is not clearly stated or maintained throughout the essay. While the introduction mentions that the solution has pros and cons, it fails to clearly state the author's own opinion on whether they agree or disagree with the statement, which is a requirement of the task. The ideas are relevant but remain somewhat superficial and under-developed. For example, the points regarding health and privacy are mentioned but not fully explored or supported with specific examples or logical depth. To improve, ensure a clear position is established in the introduction and consistently supported in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'In conclusion'). There are instances where the logical flow between sentences is weak, such as the transition between the benefits of land use and the negative impacts on health. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the progression of ideas lacks sophistication. To achieve a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus that connects logically to the overall argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There is a reliance on basic terminology, such as 'good', 'bad', 'problems', and 'things'. Some word choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as 'care washing' (likely meaning car wash) and 'mapping and planning'. There are also minor errors in word formation, such as 'facilitates' instead of 'facilities'. To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to urban planning and housing, and focus on using words with greater precision to convey your ideas more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('government start', 'people lives', 'this solution have'), article usage ('the rest of the part'), and pluralisation ('if homes is that much small'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
