Student answer (Band 6.0)

Increasing number of population in bigger cities increases the demand of more housing and the best way to provide them is to construct high rise buildings. I do not agree to this notion, it is not the best way to deal with this issue because highrise buildings will cause more environmental hazards and rush.

On one hand, housing crisis can be sorted by constructing buildings but it's not the only incredible way to resolve this issue because it can leads to over crowding and environmental pollution which will make the situation worst. Overcrowding can cause more traffic problems which can cause air pollution. Contaminated air tends to cause several health conditions people will suffer more challenging conditions. For instance, it is proved from the surveys of crowded cities that due to contaminated air people living in big cities have more chances of respiratory problems as compared to those lives in natural environment.

On the other hand, Highrise buildings will be more damaging to environment. The cities become more and more congested which increases the demands of more resources like more jobs, grocery stores and increased living standard which leads to more buildings construction. It will be more challenging to provide these resources. For example, as buildings increases there will be more covered area and no natural environment left.

To wrap it up, tall buildings can be useful to reduce shortages of housing crisis but it will caused more damage to human society.I strongly disagree with the notion that it is the best way to reduce housing shortage.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position against the idea that high-rise buildings are the best solution. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention environmental hazards and overcrowding, the arguments remain quite general and lack depth. For instance, you mention 'traffic problems' and 'respiratory problems' but do not fully explain how these are uniquely tied to high-rise buildings versus other urban planning solutions. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific examples or logical steps to support your claims, ensuring that the link between the solution (high-rise buildings) and the problems (pollution/congestion) is more thoroughly explored.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'To wrap it up' to signal transitions. However, the flow within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, and some sentences feel disjointed. For example, the transition between discussing traffic and health conditions could be smoother. Additionally, the use of referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'it can leads to,' where the pronoun 'it' does not clearly refer back to a specific noun. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'housing crisis,' 'environmental hazards,' and 'congested.' However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'incredible way' (which is not appropriate in this context) and 'make the situation worst' (should be 'worse'). You also repeat certain words like 'buildings' and 'more' frequently. To improve, try to use more precise synonyms and academic collocations to express your ideas with greater sophistication and avoid repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt to use complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader's understanding. Examples include 'it can leads to' (subject-verb agreement), 'those lives in natural environment' (should be 'those living'), and 'it will caused' (tense error). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some missing spaces after periods. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and verb tense consistency, and try to incorporate more varied complex structures with greater accuracy.
