Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks. While some people believe that alternative form of housing should be prioritised,I largel agree thta constructing high-rise appartments is one of the most effective solutions to the growing demand for accommodation in urban areas.

One of the primary reason why I support this view is that appartment buildings make highly efficent use of lmited land. This is particularly benefical in densely populated cities, where availale land is scare and extremely expensive.By constructing vertically rather then horizontally,a relatively small area can accommodate hundreds of household, which help cities to meet housing demand without spending endlessly into surrounding country side. For instance, cities such as hong kong and singapore have sucessfully use high-rise residational building to accommodate large population.

Another significant reason is that appartment building can make life convnient. When many people live in the same area,it is easier to provide services such as public transport, school, shops and hospital. In addition people can also live closer to their workplace.which can reduce time and traffic, moreover it also save your fuel.Consequently, apartment blocks can help cities to be more organised and convenient.

Admittedly, some people argue that people should have their own bunglow rather than apartment. The believe that owning a bunglow is more benefical because you dont have to wait lifts and you will have your garden. Moreover you will have your own garage where you can park your vechile. However, this is argument is not entirely convincing because every middle class family cannot afford the bunglow because of finanical support.

In conclusion, although there are arguments on both sides,I firmly believe that appartment blocks are an effective way to address urban housing shortage because they maximise land use and support efficent public services.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The ideas are relevant, such as land efficiency and the convenience of urban services. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited; for example, the argument regarding public services could be further expanded with more specific examples or deeper analysis. The counter-argument regarding bungalows is presented but lacks a sophisticated rebuttal, relying on a general financial point. To reach a higher band, the essay would benefit from more detailed supporting evidence and a more nuanced exploration of the trade-offs involved in high-density living.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'One of the primary reason', 'In addition', and 'Consequently', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, although there are minor issues with punctuation and spacing that occasionally disrupt the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the main arguments from the counter-argument. To improve, you should focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that the logical progression between sentences is smoother and less repetitive.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, covering topics like 'urban areas', 'densely populated', and 'housing shortage'. However, there are frequent spelling errors (e.g., 'appartments', 'lmited', 'scare', 'sucessfully', 'residational', 'convnient', 'bunglow', 'vechile'). These errors are noticeable and detract from the overall quality of the writing. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, the lack of precision and the high frequency of spelling mistakes prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading and learning the correct spelling of common academic terms will significantly improve your performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the attempt at complex sentences is evident, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('One of the primary reason', 'every middle class family cannot afford'), missing articles, and punctuation errors (e.g., missing spaces after commas). These errors do not impede communication, but they are persistent throughout the text. To achieve a higher band, you should aim for greater accuracy in basic grammar and punctuation, and try to incorporate more varied complex structures with fewer errors.
