Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is observed that developed cities today are facing the problem of overpopulation and housing facilities. Many people believe that building tall houses with hundreds of apartment blocks would facilitate in solving this issue. I agree to the given statement to a large extent. My justifications to the statement will be elaborated in the ensuing paragraphs.

The foremost reason for the agreement is creating tall buildings will access the citizens to more houses. For instance, a building with 100 apartments would provide housing for 100 homeless people. As we know, many people migrate to developed cities for better opportunities but face a major challenge in securing a home. For example, many students shift to different country for better and quality education. Even though, migration is causing overpopulation and threat to the environment in the cities, individuals still have the right to basic needs. Furthermore, the scarcity of rental areas will be solved if government startup with the plans of policies of building tall apartment blocks.

The other reason for supporting the creation of tall buildings is proper utilization of certain space. If we can build a 5 storeys house with only 10 apartments, creating a 20 storeys building in the same area would multiply the apartments by 4. This results in use of less area, reduces the crowd and number of buildings in cities. While people are able to get the shelter, on the other hand, extra land area can be used for recreational activities like parks, gardens and children play ground. Hence, it can positively affect the mental heath of people living in busy cities with an escape from the hectic lifestyle around the nature.

Therefore, building tall apartment is not an easy task. Government or local bodies should have proper supervision on the development activities in their region. Despite of the benefits of tall apartments, environmental degradation and sustainability should also be considered.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of tall apartment blocks. The ideas are relevant, focusing on housing capacity and land efficiency. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument about environmental degradation is introduced in the conclusion but is not explored in the body paragraphs, which prevents a more nuanced discussion. The examples provided, such as the mention of students migrating, are somewhat generic. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the 'extent' of your agreement by considering potential drawbacks or counter-arguments more thoroughly within the body of the essay rather than just mentioning them at the end.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'The foremost reason', 'Furthermore', and 'The other reason', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'Even though, migration is causing overpopulation', where the punctuation and flow are slightly awkward. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the final paragraph acts more as a summary of new points rather than a synthesis of the preceding arguments, which affects the overall logical progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'overpopulation', 'utilization', and 'sustainability'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'access the citizens to more houses' (should be 'provide citizens with access to') and 'government startup with the plans of policies' (which is awkward and non-idiomatic). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. You rely on some basic phrasing that could be elevated to sound more academic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'building tall houses with hundreds of apartment blocks would facilitate in solving' (should be 'facilitate the solution to' or 'help solve'), '5 storeys house' (should be '5-storey house'), and 'Despite of the benefits' (should be 'Despite the benefits'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors in article usage and pluralization throughout. These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score.
