Student answer (Band 6.0)

In these years, population has reached its peak in many countries which takes more house space to live with a family. To solve this problem, building tall apartments has become solution, While some argue that authority should expand living areas to forests and mountains, I firmly believe that high-rise buildings are more advantageous mainly due to its small space can fit many families.

big high-rise apartments take about same space as society of villas and can make home for almost double of the citizens then villa. Tall buildings are often a status symbol in many developed nations as it showcases wealth among people. After that, in city areas where ground space are limited, skyscrapers are great solution to prevent taking more space and use the area efficiently. For instance, cities like Mumbai which have overpopulation with no more expandable space have to male long towers for its residents. By doing that, government effectively use the extra space and plan the city accordingly.

Nevertheless, Tall towers are often not considered good for living, due to its design and how small amount of area it provides to spend whole life in. Although, cutting down forests or expanding village to mountains are preferred by many individuals. Doing that can unlock plenty of space to make houses and live a peaceful life. Switzerland, for example, does not make bigger towers or staked homes, it expands the villages onto mountains, which takes citizens closer to nature and maintain the traffic caused by overpopulation.

To conclude, While there are certain merits of expanding more area of cities to live a quite life, I firmly believe that high-rise apartments are more logical choice, given its clear advantage of using small space more efficiently.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of high-rise buildings. The ideas are relevant, such as space efficiency and status symbols, and the counter-argument regarding urban sprawl is acknowledged. However, the development is somewhat uneven. For instance, the claim that tall buildings are a 'status symbol' is mentioned but not linked back to the core issue of providing enough homes. The example of Mumbai is relevant, but the explanation of Switzerland’s approach is slightly underdeveloped. To reach a higher band, ensure that every supporting point directly reinforces your central argument regarding housing capacity.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'After that' to start a new point or 'Although, cutting down forests...' which is grammatically incomplete as a sentence starter. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to create a more natural, sophisticated transition between arguments.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'overpopulation' and 'efficiently', but there are also persistent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'make long towers' instead of 'construct skyscrapers' and 'society of villas' which is an unnatural phrasing. Spelling is generally accurate, but the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on repetitive structures. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and academic terminology related to urban planning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('in city areas', 'to make houses'), pluralization ('take more house space'), and subject-verb agreement ('government effectively use'). Some sentences are fragmented or lack proper punctuation, such as the opening sentence which is a run-on. The control of grammar is inconsistent, and while complex structures are attempted, they often contain errors that slightly impede the flow of the text.
