IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The most efficient way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks. With the constant rise in population and job opportunities in cities, not enough homes are left for accomodation. The most feasible solution for this problem is the construction of tall apartment blocks. Therefore, I totally agree to this statement.
A city is often referred to as the land of dreams, where one arrives to pursue his career. Job opportunities are vast but at the cost of decreasing accomodation spaces. For example, a person transitioning from village life to city life, that too in a city like Delhi, finds it difficult to find a place as the city is already overpopulated.
Similar to job opportunities, cities are also known for better education quality and widely recognized institutions. As a result, cities are always welcoming people, but the argument here is that people really don't feel so.
Even as generations move forward in cities, every child seeks independence by owning his own space. In the city life, this is a sense of accomplishment for him. For example, my brother is doing well in business and wants to purchase his own property in Mumbai, but the costs have reached the sky due to overpopulation. As a consequence, the green chains of life are being sacrificed to create more land space for building homes.
Humans are digging their own grave by erasing our reasons for survival, the trees. Instead, I believe the government should use the remaining land space wisely by building tall apartment blocks for providing homes and should totally restrain from putting axes on our green friends.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have identified the core issue—urban population growth—and provided a logical argument for high-rise development. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While you mention job opportunities and education, the link between these factors and the necessity of tall buildings could be more explicitly connected to urban planning principles. The argument is supported by personal examples, such as your brother's experience in Mumbai, which adds relevance. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph focuses more deeply on the 'why' behind your arguments rather than just describing the situation in cities.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Therefore', 'For example', and 'As a consequence', to link ideas. However, the progression between paragraphs could be smoother. For instance, the transition from the discussion of job opportunities to the desire for individual property ownership feels slightly abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is a bit mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence flows naturally into the next would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'feasible', 'transitioning', and 'accomplishment'. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'accomodation' (accommodation), and some slightly awkward phrasing, such as 'green chains of life' and 'putting axes on our green friends', which sound a bit informal or non-idiomatic. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise academic collocations and avoiding overly emotive or metaphorical language would help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I totally agree to this statement' (should be 'agree with'), and issues with article usage and preposition choice. Some sentences, like 'For example, a person transitioning from village life to city life, that too in a city like Delhi, finds it difficult...', are a bit clunky. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and refining your use of complex sentence structures will improve your accuracy.
