Student answer (Band 6.0)

The rapid urbanization has become increasingly prevalent in modern societies. This development is considered as most effective solution to alleviate housing shortages in urban cities by constructing large number of houses in small areas. I strongly agree to this as it offers greater utilization of space, more public safety and less maintenance.

One of the main reasons of constructing high-rise buildings is that they not only alleviate housing shortage issue but also serve large population. Tall apartment buildings can accommodate large number of families at one place, without having to purchase wider land area. This can reduce the government's pressure of constructing new houses to provide shelter to people and also help in utilizing land effectively such as making more green spaces, building schools and hospitals.

Another significant reason for this development is that it improves public safety and needs less maintenance. Living in tall apartments can provide more safety as compared with individual houses. This is because such apartments are more likely to restrict outsiders and strangers without permissions, contributing to more public safety. For example, safety policies of high-rise apartments are often more strict, which is difficult to replicate in individual houses. As a result, people may inclined more towards living in an apartment rather than living in a house. Therefore, it helps in reducing housing shortage issue and accommodate large number of people in one building.

In conclusion, constructing tall building is beneficial for both individuals and governments as it reduces the burden of housing shortages and provides more safety to individuals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt clearly, taking a firm stance in favor of high-rise buildings. The ideas are relevant, focusing on space efficiency and safety. However, the development is somewhat limited; while the points are clear, they could be expanded with more specific examples or deeper analysis. For instance, the argument regarding 'public safety' is a good point, but it remains a bit general. The conclusion is brief and summarizes the main points effectively. To reach a higher band, ensure that each body paragraph provides a more detailed exploration of the implications of the chosen solution.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'One of the main reasons,' 'Another significant reason,' and 'Therefore' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences are repetitive, such as the final sentence of the second body paragraph which restates the prompt's core issue rather than adding new insight.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific language like 'urbanization,' 'alleviate,' and 'utilization.' However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'urban cities' (which is redundant) and 'people may inclined more' (grammatical error affecting lexical precision). To improve, the student should aim for more sophisticated synonyms and ensure that word choices are natural and precise in an academic context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent minor grammatical errors. Examples include 'The rapid urbanization has become' (article usage), 'This development is considered as most effective' (missing article), and 'people may inclined more' (incorrect verb form). Punctuation is generally correct, but the frequency of these small errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
