Student answer (Band 6.0)

India is the world's most populated country but in terms of landmass, India stands at seventh place. As a result of this high population and low landmass, India have the highest ratio of people per square meter of area. To accommodate such large population, I completely agree that the best way is to build tall buildings and apartment blocks.

People from rural areas migrate to the large and urban cities because of various reasons such as job market, infrastructure and healthcare facilities. Since major companies are located in the large cities, people have to reside in the same city putting burden on the housing infrastructure.

Every country has a limited amount of landmass, we cannot expand horizontally and cut forests in order to build homes. The best option seems to expand vertically by adding more floors to the buildings and towers. It helps to reduce the deforestation at the same time providing accommodation to the public.

While adding floors and building tall towers seems to be the only viable option, it is harmful as it is more prone to lightning and causes major problems to the air traffic. For example, there are laws which prohibits the building of tall towers near airports and beaches as it becomes difficult for the pilots to navigate and land safely on the runaway. Building tall towers along the coastline blocks the natural airflow of the city creating humid and hot conditions inside the city.

Facilities like remote work should be encouraged by the government so that people can work from rural places and reduce the burden on the larger cities. Building better healthcare facilities in the rural villages will motivate people to opt for the treatment at their local hospitals. Apart from this, tall buildings are the best way to cater large population in the major cities as compared to expanding horizontally leading to deforestation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You effectively argue for the necessity of vertical expansion while acknowledging potential drawbacks, such as air traffic interference and environmental impacts like airflow obstruction. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. However, the conclusion introduces a new, slightly contradictory argument regarding remote work and rural development, which shifts the focus away from the primary prompt about city housing. To reach a higher band, ensure that all supporting points directly reinforce your central thesis rather than introducing alternative solutions that dilute your main argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central focus, and you use cohesive devices such as 'As a result of', 'While', and 'Apart from this' to link your thoughts. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the connection between the final paragraph and the rest of the essay is somewhat abrupt. The use of referencing is generally clear, but improving the variety of linking words would enhance the flow. Overall, the structure is sound and allows the reader to follow your argument without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'landmass', 'accommodate', 'migrate', and 'infrastructure' appropriately. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'runaway' instead of 'runway' and 'cater large population' which should be 'cater to a large population'. While you attempt to use some less common vocabulary, the overall range is sufficient but not particularly sophisticated. To improve, focus on more precise collocations and ensure that word forms are used correctly in context to avoid minor errors that slightly impact the professional tone of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'India have' (should be 'has'), 'prohibits' (should be 'prohibit' to agree with 'laws'), and 'the large and urban cities' (the 'the' is redundant). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though some sentences could be refined for better clarity. While the errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would significantly boost your performance in this criterion.
