Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued that constructing high-rise buildings in large cities is the best way to provide sufficient homes. Even though there are certain drawbacks I completely agree with this statement.

On the one hand, tall apartment blocks are cost efficient, space saving and have necessary amenities. By establishing high rise building it helps the individual to gain access to basic facilities such as fitness centers, community halls and swimming pools. For instance, a person living in an apartment can quickly access these amenities whereas others have to pay separately.

Furthermore, the apartment blocks are space saving as it can be occupied by numerous people. This can positively enhance the quality of atmosphere by decreasing the land usage by humans. As most of the people are suffering without homes and land in the urban area the apartment blocks serves as homes for most humans. Hence in my perspective high apartments provide sufficient homes.

On the other hand, due to these high-rise buildings there are significant number of disadvantages. Which include difficulty in evacuation during fires and earthquacks. Most of the apartment blocks are constructed without government permission which can be harmful in the later days. These builds cannot withstand fires as most of the buildings lack basic fire safety. For example, during an emergency evacuating all the residents is significantly difficult in contrast with evacuating other residents.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that high-rise buildings have numerous benefits as they are provide homes in a simple space. They can also be at high risk if safety is ignored.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of high-rise buildings. The ideas are relevant, such as space efficiency and shared amenities, though the development is somewhat superficial. For example, the point about 'decreasing land usage' is a good start but lacks depth. The counter-argument regarding safety is relevant, but the claim that 'most apartment blocks are constructed without government permission' is a generalization that weakens the argument's logical foundation. To reach a higher band, you should provide more nuanced examples and ensure your supporting points are grounded in realistic scenarios rather than sweeping claims.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the argument. You use basic cohesive devices like 'On the one hand,' 'Furthermore,' and 'In conclusion' to signal shifts in the text. However, the flow within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical. For instance, the transition between the benefits of amenities and the conclusion of the second paragraph is slightly abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is unclear, such as the phrase 'in contrast with evacuating other residents' at the end of the third paragraph, which is confusing as it is unclear who these 'other residents' are. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'high-rise buildings,' 'amenities,' and 'evacuation.' However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'earthquacks' (spelling error) and 'these builds' (incorrect noun form). The phrasing 'quality of atmosphere' is also slightly unnatural in this context. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that your spelling is accurate, as these small errors prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher, more sophisticated level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. For example, 'By establishing high rise building it helps' contains a dangling modifier, and 'the apartment blocks serves' shows a subject-verb agreement error. Additionally, 'Which include difficulty' is a sentence fragment. While you attempt complex structures, the control over them is inconsistent. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that every sentence has a clear subject and main verb will significantly improve your accuracy and overall score.
