Student answer (Band 6.5)

The best method to provide sufficient homes in large areas is by constructing high rise apartment complexes which effectively reduces the shortage of homes. The below essay will state the reason on why I completely agree with the given sentence.

Although living in tall apartments can seem troublesome and scary, there are many benefits to such scenario. the principle advantage of tall buildings is land efficiency. Urban space is strictly limited and expensive, making horizontal expansion impractical in dense metropolitan areas. This also helps in providing homes for a large group of people by taking up only a little amount of space. For example, city like Tokyo have prevented housing shortages by prioritizing more number of floors over singular homes, proving that vertical development is essential for large density living.

Furthermore, tall building developments allow for better buildings and resource management. When housing is more focused vertically, governments can deliver crucial services such as water, electricity, and public transport much more effectively than in hefty suburban areas. Additionally, tall apartment buildings often showcase commercial spaces on ground levels, allowing residents to access shops, gyms, and important places within walking distance, thereby reducing urban traffic congestion. However some people believe that such type of houses result in poor community communications and will soon get overcrowded. But new models and designs made sure to keep such difficulties in mind while planning new buildings.

In conclusion, providing the public with tall apartment blocks is the only way to overcome house shortages as it uses the provided land efficiently and is cost saving.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding land efficiency and resource management are relevant and well-supported with examples, such as the reference to Tokyo. The ideas are extended sufficiently to meet the requirements of the task. However, the essay could be improved by acknowledging the counter-argument more deeply rather than dismissing it quickly in the final paragraph. Overall, the response is well-focused and directly answers the question, demonstrating a clear understanding of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Additionally', and 'However' are used effectively to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to elevate the cohesion to a higher level. Overall, the structure is clear and supports the development of the argument effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. The student uses topic-specific terms like 'land efficiency', 'vertical development', and 'urban traffic congestion' correctly. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'hefty suburban areas' (which is not a standard collocation) and 'singular homes' (which is slightly awkward). However, these do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more precise and natural collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'city like Tokyo have' (subject-verb agreement) and 'a little amount of space' (should be 'a small amount'). Punctuation is generally correct, although there are occasional slips, such as the lowercase 't' at the start of the second paragraph. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the errors do not cause difficulty for the reader. The student shows a good grasp of sentence construction, but more consistent accuracy in complex structures is needed for a higher score.
