Student answer (Band 5.0)

Many experts believe that the best way to provide enough house in populated cities is to construct tall buildings. I completely agree with the statement because tall apartment blocks occupy less space and provide more homes.

Firstly, large towns are crowded by significant number of people and required more land to build homes for residents. This problem can be solved by building tall mansions to fulfill the requirement of houses of citizens. For instance, cities like Paris and Milan in Europe are based on these same concepts. Population of those cities is high and authorities planned this housing plan to mitigate the issue of accommodation for people. Moreover, tall building occupy less area and fulfill the demand of housing as well.

Secondly, apartments are less expensive in comparison to a separate house. Apartments become affordable for all the residents. In fact, it solves another stress of finance for many people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement, which severely limits your ability to develop your ideas. While you state a clear position, the arguments are underdeveloped. For example, you mention Paris and Milan as examples but do not explain how their specific housing models support your argument effectively. Because the response is only 150 words, it fails to address the task fully, resulting in a low score for task achievement. To improve, you must expand your supporting points with more detailed explanations, counter-arguments, and specific examples to meet the length requirement and demonstrate a deeper exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay has a basic structure with an introduction and two body paragraphs. You use simple cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'In fact' to link ideas. However, the progression of ideas is limited due to the brevity of the text. Paragraphing is present, but the paragraphs themselves are too short to demonstrate a sophisticated logical flow. To improve, ensure that each paragraph contains a clear topic sentence followed by supporting evidence and a concluding thought. Using a wider variety of linking words and referencing (e.g., 'this approach', 'such developments') would help improve the flow between sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is generally functional but limited. You use basic terms like 'large towns', 'crowded', and 'less expensive'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as using 'mansions' to describe tall apartment blocks, which is incorrect as a mansion typically refers to a large, detached house. You also have minor errors in word form, such as 'provide enough house' instead of 'housing'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise academic vocabulary and collocations, such as 'high-density urban areas' or 'cost-effective accommodation', rather than relying on simple, repetitive language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'required more land' (should be 'require') and 'tall building occupy' (should be 'buildings occupy'). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and pluralization, such as 'a significant number of people'. While the meaning is generally clear, these frequent errors indicate a lack of control over complex structures. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that your sentence variety is supported by accurate grammar. Proofreading for basic errors like pluralization and verb tense consistency is essential.
