Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given topic brings up the idea of changing the infrastructure of large cities to provide enough homes for the people by building tall buildings and apartment blocks.

Introducing tall buildings and apartment structure to the community instead of big societies and building homes side by side is definitely a good initiative. It will save space resource and one of the biggest features of apartment structure is that it will help us save agriculture land, farms, wildlife and their habitats which were often wiped out for making newer socities and housing schemes.

There are some difficulties and disadvantages like insuficient funds and resources in such projects. Such apartments are often too expensive for the locals to afford, these apartments lack practicality it's often difficult to move your belongings throughout the building. maintenance is a big problem that is seen in major projects.

Karachi apartments are great example of such high-rise building projects these apartment are often too crowded and don't facilitate with many resources. Living in such apartments cuts you off from the nature, in a house you can have a personal lawn, garage and many facilities that people living in apartments often desire. They have to use lifts, stairs to reach their apartments which also wastes energy and time.

In conclusion tall buildings have many advantages but offer limited facilities than a normal house. House provide bigger spaces more rooms easy access to your garage, also saves your energy and time because you don't have to walk that much towards your apartment and one of the most important thing privacy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the advantages and disadvantages of tall apartment blocks. However, the position is somewhat inconsistent; while the introduction suggests it is a 'good initiative,' the body paragraphs focus heavily on the drawbacks, and the conclusion leans towards the benefits of traditional houses. To reach a higher band, you should clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain that stance throughout. The ideas are relevant, but the development is somewhat superficial. For instance, the point about 'insufficient funds' is mentioned but not explained in the context of urban planning or government policy. Expanding on the 'why' and 'how' would improve the depth of your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Transitions between sentences are often abrupt, such as the jump from 'maintenance is a big problem' to the example of 'Karachi apartments.' The use of referencing is occasionally unclear; for example, 'such projects' and 'such apartments' are used repeatedly, which makes the flow feel a bit repetitive. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore,' 'Conversely,' 'In light of this') to better connect your ideas and improve the overall progression of your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'infrastructure,' 'agriculture land,' and 'habitats.' However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'big societies' (which is not standard for residential areas) and 'don't facilitate with many resources' (which is grammatically awkward). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic descriptors. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. Expanding your range of synonyms will help you express your ideas with greater sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('in a house,' 'in conclusion tall buildings'), punctuation issues (run-on sentences like 'maintenance is a big problem that is seen in major projects'), and subject-verb agreement errors ('House provide'). These errors do not usually impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic errors like pluralization and article usage, and try to incorporate more varied complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses or relative clauses, with greater accuracy.
