Student answer (Band 6.0)

Since the world's population has boomed in the last few years, the demand for new houses and apartments has tremendously increased. The large cities have crowded living spaces and to cope up this issue new buildings have to be constructed. But the city spaces are not large enough to build large amount of apartments individually. For this reason, different ideas are being discussed to overcome this escalating issue. One of the plans is to build heighted buildings for the reason that they could provide space for thriving population in small space.

I agree with this statement because of the fact that gigantic skyscrapers save significant space rather than small houses or tiny apartments. The cities are in great problem as they have land shortage and to overcome this difficulty they are building tall apartments that also provide living to increasing population. For instance, Manhattan, an American city, has very crowded population and to solve this issue they have build sky touching buildings that not only provide enough space for growing number of people but also increases area for green spaces and for roads and footpaths.

Another example for this is Singapore that is a tiny country with a little land but they have growing number of people. To address this issue they also have a clear strategy to conserve land by constructing tall residential apartments. That approach solved the problem of land shortage and also helped them to provide their residents with living spaces.

To sum up this, I firmly agree that tall residential housing schemes intent to solve two major hurdles of any country, one is decreasing housing capacity and other is land shortages in big cities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of tall apartment blocks. The ideas are relevant, and the examples of Manhattan and Singapore provide appropriate support for the argument. However, the development is somewhat repetitive; the points about land shortage and population growth are restated multiple times without significant expansion. To reach a higher band, you should aim to explore the counter-arguments or discuss the broader implications of high-rise living, such as social isolation or infrastructure demands, to provide a more nuanced and fully developed response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. For example, the phrase 'to address this issue' and 'for this reason' are used frequently. Additionally, some transitions between sentences feel slightly abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the flow and coherence of the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the message to be conveyed clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'gigantic skyscrapers' and 'escalating issue'. However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'heighted buildings' (should be 'high-rise' or 'tall'), 'sky touching' (should be 'skyscrapers' or 'towering'), and 'cope up this issue' (should be 'cope with'). The range is sufficient for the task, but more precise and academic collocations would elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'they have build' (should be 'they have built'), 'crowded population' (should be 'dense population'), and 'to sum up this' (should be 'to sum up'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the control over verb tenses and article usage is inconsistent. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining the use of articles and prepositions, which would lead to more error-free sentences.
